NY chicken lover!!!!

Keeps snowing here in Buffalo. Luckily the schools are closed - so no work the last 2 days has been majorly restorative. The chicken door is covered in snow, so the light sensor isn't picking up daylight, so I don't even have to go out to close it. Went to get eggs and offer treats. The girls are still laying, and now, my younger girls have joined the "club"!!! however, their eggs are still pretty tiny. Dark enough to be encouraging though! Finally feel like I have a good enough baseline to begin to darken my eggs. I want them to be dark dark mahogany. I am working with two separate lines of Black coppers. Here is a pic of some of the best eggs Ive been getting recently. Didn't use a filter and the auto setting on an actual camera instead of a cell phone for once.

Incubator has some birchen eggs but due to a power outage, I'm not so sure how that project will turn out. Coop construction has been halted for now. Might even get a chance to pull out the X-country skiis this year after all.

The dogs are loving the snow , as always. I'm getting some pretty fabulous photo backdrops!

Also it's pretty funny to see the "little" german shepherd try to take giant gallops with each step. The older one, it could be her last winter since shes 13. She might be the most important thing in my life. I'm sure I will go out later and make snow angels with them. Laughing in the snow like a little kid- but really...just a weirdo playing alone with her 2 dogs. Playing in the snow in the woods with the dogs is great fun. They let me pick up on that animalistic energy generated by the forest and for me that is enough. I just have to keep an eye out- to ensure they aren't scarfing up a mouth full of deer poop before they come "mouth" at my face while I'm on the ground and defenseless. They really LOVE deer poop. yuck.

Deer poop, rabbit poop, chicken poop......all fair game

Blizzard here, over 30" and who knows on the drifts. Our old two row corn planter in the front yard disappeared yesterday, I see the seat is visible this morning. Didn't have to go to work though, tickets were being given out so DW wouldn't let me. Third trip yesterday with the lawn tractor snow blower blew the $80 drive belt that no one even if they were open and I could get to them keeps in stock. Just glad the power didn't go out, had no gas for the generator and the gas station in town if I could get there had closed for the day.
send me the belt info. Jon has a friend who has odd belts on hand just incase.

We got about 31" here in Lake Pleasant. My goats were peaking out of their shed and all I could see was their faces! Chickens stayed locked in today until I can move snow tonight after work.

We're snowblowed out and the roads were clear enough that I made it to work this afternoon.

That however did not stop people from driving 30 on the highway on perfectly clear roads because it snowed yesterday, ugh.

Well I'll be interested in how those Birchens come out. PM me if you must.

I simply can not afford the $25 a chick asked for on FB.. Eggs are expensive too, though a little more affordable I'm not sure I trust anyone. If you decide to sell eggs even three or four would be nice. Since you're closer I might have a better turn out.

I spoke with a guy at the Small Farm Homestead thing who had goats. I think he would have come and helped me get set up if I'd have asked. Such enablers we folks are.

Hair goats. He had yarn. It was very nice too. He said he had them in hoop houses. Cattle panel houses. I can do that.

Current view INSIDE my horse barn. That's the coop parked at the back right corner. Chickens been hiding under the tarp covering the hay stack or in the enclosed sawdust stall. I have 6' overhang on the barn, but the eaves are open, so when the wicked wind blows... hubby's snowblowed path this morning is long gone, gave up walking that path when it reached thigh deep and it was only going to get deeper. Instead walked up the road to the neighbors driveway and got through the small thigh deep drift to get inside.
