NY chicken lover!!!!

Got my first pip already this morning, of course it is at the wrong end *sigh* Will see when I get home after work.

Seen in one of the Facebook sale groups a Broody Red Orp hen in Rome. Tempted to get her just so I can use a broody instead!

I have ordered eggs from a variety of sources. I'm excited and nervous. Shipped eggs are not easy to hatch. I ordered more than I need to accommodate for the expected losses due to shipping damage. In an ideal shipping situation I expect a 60% hatch rate, which would give me about 50 chicks. An average shipped egg hatch rate is more like 40% which is 36 chicks. So, I am basically planning to keep what hatches in the worst case scenario (20-25 chicks), sell some extras in an average-ideal scenario (30-45 chicks), and panic if either of the opposite ends of the spectrum scenarios happen (less than 6 or more than 60). Thus the nervous and excited feelings. I'm hoping to set 72 shipped eggs and some of my own. My incubator holds 90. Eep.

This weekend I will test my incubator. I plan to set the eggs on 3/31 or 4/1.

Broody hens are wonderful. I still prefer an incubator sometimes, but my one broody hatched 15/15 last year. I can't beat that.

Good luck on your hatch!

I had a broody that stuck and hatched a few last year. And another broody that wont stick to the nest (box hopper) but will take chicks. I had a wonderful blue orp hen that was a great broody, but lost her a couple years ago.

The Wyandotte eggs did not fare well, but the breeder offered to ship me replacement eggs when ready for only the cost of shipping. Most were clear with floating air cells and a couple blood rings. Out of 14 I have 5 or 6 of those left. They are more torpedo shaped, so worry about that as well.

Little Girl insisted that for her "Share Day" today that she take a chick in. Except we don't have chicks yet and they wouldn't survive. She was adamant. Settled on taking the book "Dora's Eggs" and talking about chicks hatching instead.

Where did they ship from? My worst experience has been with eggs shipped from TX. FL and CA have been ok, but something about the route between TX and here last year was awful. I spent a LOT and got no hatched chicks. I'm hoping the weather and USPS cooperate with safe travels for my eggs next week.

At least Little Girl is interested. My kids think it's old news.

Sorr if I missed greetings of newbies. I'm so busy between work and DW that I just have time to read real quick. Spring is coming I hope.

Broody hen still on eggs and I haven't opened the incu. I expect more will go broody. I'm getting more than enough eggs each day so where would I put more hens if I hatched a bunch in an incu.
