NY chicken lover!!!!

We had GH's and wow they are LLLLLLOOOOOOOUUUUUUUDDDDDD! Silly, crazy things. For us 1 GH = 10 chicken hens

We have done decently well this years on ticks, not many at all. We free range 20-30 hens a day.

Tab's chicken obsession :

I went and shut in the chickens. My delaware hen and her female chick were missing, her male chick was in the coop with the other birds. The last time they were seen was yesterday. I hope they are just hiding somewhere.

Tab, I hope they turn up in one piece!

I am very familiar with these products. Advantage is only labeled for fleas and is very safe and effective for the first 3 weeks after application. The fourth week it doesn't work quite as well. I have not heard that it works for ticks.

Frontline is a slow kill product. The ticks will attach and the medication should kill the tick in about 36 hours or so. Usually you have found and removed the tick by then. It is reassuring to know that if you miss any, they will eventually die.

Unfortunately, the pickins for safe tick control in cats is small.

Why don't they make a people topical tick control???

People tick control! My DD had Lyme disease, lots of people in our area get it-not unusual AT ALL. Check the CDC Lyme statistics for our area-we are scary high! Here's a link http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/stats/chartstables/reportedcases_statelocality.html

Anyway, DD is fine 3 years later after the 3 weeks of antibiotics. I actually asked her Pediatrician if there was a "human Advantage neck medicine" He looked at me like I was crazy! We have been using this natural oils repelleant I bought at TSC. Works pretty good, put some on the goats too when the mosquitoes were really high after "Irene"

I am so sorry to hear that.

I had an Amereucana dissapear while free ranging. We were cleaning out the coop. She didn't come back, but I have read lots of stories where they do come back days or weeks later. I hope this turns out to be the case for you.

I have lost my head rooster, a duck hen, and five other hens to a fox. Well the only one for sure was the duck hen as I came upon the fox eating her. However everything but the rooster was right around that day. Stupid thing got smaller hens and didn't get to finish them all some got away from it and died. Didn't let it finish my duck either. It was very mangy looking can't let them free range or even out in their yard unless I will be home around dusk to lock them up. If I let them in their yard some fly out and I am sick of feeding the fox.

As for guinea hens yes they are loud. Male guineas are MEAN! They tormented my chickens and got sent to freezer camp. I have 7 more growing out right now. Not sure how many males I have but I know this time there is at least one female. I hope that means I won't have the same problems. My new head rooster is a wuss. So if the males want to be mean they will. When I lost my last head rooster the last male guinea took it upon himself to attack everything ducks included. Wish the fox had gotten him instead. The guineas and muscovies seemed to do a good job on the bugs. I think the muscovies are actually better though. I know when I had to lock them up midway through the summer (everything decided the garden was their buffet) the bug population seemed to skyrocket.

I had a grey fox come around here just once. Mama Sumatra let me know her babies weren't safe, and I saw him slink away. I grabbed my closest weapon a 16 guage, and...well, a facefull of lead at close range took care of that. A few coons met a similar demise this year the same exact way. I've killed an awful lot of predetors since I got chickens and ducks
