NY chicken lover!!!!

I wouldn't worry much either way, but didn't you say you had silkies? my silkies always hatch early so I might be tempted to take them out of the turner before the weekend. I've had chicks pop out in a turner (guineas LOVE to do this to me) and nothing bad happened.

ETA: my broodies mess with their eggs all the way through 'lockdown' so I am not sure it matters all that much. :P

Make sure to tell us what you get, especially since some of them are my eggs. Go NN chicks go!

Anyone close to watertown? I am in the military and just came back from deployment. I am looking to start a small flock with my children. I am have a little troble finding chicks, other than the farm supply. I would like some BO's, sussex, RIW, silkies, or any breeds that are good with children. thanks

Is that close to petersburg, berlin, or grafton. I have got bantams in silkies, brahmas, and cochins. I've also got some laying hens that r great with kids. if you want large cochins i recently puchased eggs from wwmicasa1 and will be selling chicks from the eggs i hatch from them when they lay. If you are interested let me know.

And in other news - I'm getting a pure, beautiful Araucana rooster tomorrow. I'll be updating with photos then!

I'm good with your advise. I've seen my broody's break all kinds of "hatching rules". Turning on day 19, getting off the nest when the 1st one just pipped (like they knew it was their last meal for 3 days...lol) teaching the older chicks to eat when one is zipping, etc. So I say what you say!

Don't even get me started on what broodies do that people swear won't work. I swear my Silkie didn't read the rule book....she turned one after it pipped....but I think she turned it to the outside of the nest so it could breath.

The first broody I had got off the nest. I flipped out, running around trying to find her and put her back....LOL...she went back when she was good and ready....she hatched 4 of 4 eggs....what do people know about hatching chicks?

My second broody sat for a week on golf balls, a week on eggs and quit after one of the children from next door picked her up and carried her around for about 5 minutes.

My third broody went broody on the sand floor. Silly chicken.

Personally I think we humans worry to much about doing it right. Chickens have a bird brain and they hatch chicks without any book learning.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I need some experienced advice. In order to have the chicks hatch in the classroom somewhere between Tues and Thurs of next week (Day 19-21) we planned accordingly. Problem is that Day 18 falls on a Sunday. School is closed up. No janitors around and teachers don't have keys to the building.
What do you suggest? That I stop the egg turning on Friday afternoon the 16th Day or wait till early in the AM on Day 19? I could camp out in the building but I promised to babysit for 3 children under 4 so the parents could go somewhere with friends for an overnight trip. Fri night to Sat afternoon. I know...crazy...
Let me know what you wise "chicken" sages think.
K......

After reading cass' and other advice I concur....don't worry!!!!

Ok fellow nybycers!!! What forms of storage do YOU use when waiting to get an incubator full of eggs? what about temp, turning, and how long do you store and get good results? All advice welcome!!

thanks!!

Ginny

What is this 'storage' you speak of? =). I just put all eggs that look good to me that I want to try hatching in a special carton on my counter. Plop them in the incubator on set date. Have never tried more than a week on the counter, but I've been known to pull a few that are within the week out of the fridge and they hatch just fine. I get almost 100% hatches with my own mutt eggs, but can't say as much for shipped eggs. :P

I collect for 7 days. Just store them at room temperature in an open egg carton. at the end of 7 days I use my cleanest, nicest looking 42 eggs and put the rest in the fridge. Everytime I add eggs to a carton I rock each carton, so I probably rock each carton 3 times a day.
