NY chicken lover!!!!

What is this 'storage' you speak of? =). I just put all eggs that look good to me that I want to try hatching in a special carton on my counter. Plop them in the incubator on set date. Have never tried more than a week on the counter, but I've been known to pull a few that are within the week out of the fridge and they hatch just fine. I get almost 100% hatches with my own mutt eggs, but can't say as much for shipped eggs. :P

I will be collecting Buckeye eggs. I can get 30 in the incubator, but I will only get 12-15 in a week. Last year I put them in the basement(cooler), in the incubator, not on, but the auto turn cradle on and out of 7 eggs 1 hatched. I would like to do better. So I want to know, what has worked out for other people..........

I saw them. Can I come get them this weekend? My other babies have wing and tail feathers, I need smaller ones. And the second side of my brooder is feeling lonely.

yes. Saturday I'll be here till 3. Sunday anytime. Shoot me a pm and I'll give you my cell # and directions again if you need them

I will have BBS Orps hatching Friday - PM me if interested!

She arrived this morning at 6:30 am - 15 hours AFTER the PO's "guaranteed" arrival time. I have a call in to customer service. She is alive, time matters!

Poor girl! I hope she's OK!

My Incubators are in my basement where the temperature is between 65-68 during the entire hatch. The Humidity was kept at 35% and the Hova Bator was set at 100.5 (Therm reads 99.0) All eggs develop great Turner and Fan in that unit. I switch them over to the LG on Day 18, and the Temperature seems fine until the chicks start hatching, then it is all over the place. Humididty spikes which I expect, but the temp going up 6 degrees? Of note, my BLRW eggs seem to be the ones that are not hatching (i think 1 out of 6) all other breeds are 18 for 19, so maybe I need to look more at that pen and figure out what is different with them besides them laying on the floor.

This temp is to low. 70-80* is good. While it may seem that the temp in the room is constant, if it is a high traffic area then the temp will fluctuate enough to throw things off. It could be that the area where the thermometer is registers 65* but elsewhere in the room is cooler. Never go by the thermostat setting for room temp. If you'd like to continue to use the basement you might want to create a separate "room" by hanging tarps and putting an oil filled electric heater in it to bring the temp up to 80* Try to keep drafts and traffic to a minimum.

I notice in my Gen 1588 that eggs in certain areas of the incu hatch first and others later. I have read that the area near the turner motor is warmer than the opposite corner. I prefer to leave that hole empty.

You may want to keep the temp higher than 99.5. Even to 101.0. I suggest two digitals or at least one if your not using one. If you use two, it was advised by Don Schrider ALBC expert, to take an average of the two.

Your humidity is important and the PP mag recommends. 35% to day 16. Then up it to 55% to day 19. Then up it to 65%.

I personally don't understand switching eggs to another incubator on day 18. You either wash the one you've used for the entire hatch or the one you've used to hatch. Either way your washing a unit. Not to mention that it should be cleaned anyhow. There are still bacteria in there from the shell of the eggs and moisture I would think.

As for the BLRW eggs you might check for fertility. Give the birds a small dose of vitamins a few days before you begin collecting eggs. Also if you got the roo and the hens from the same batch that might be a problem too.

These are just thoughts of course and not meant to insinuate you are doing anything wrong.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I need some experienced advice. In order to have the chicks hatch in the classroom somewhere between Tues and Thurs of next week (Day 19-21) we planned accordingly. Problem is that Day 18 falls on a Sunday. School is closed up. No janitors around and teachers don't have keys to the building.
What do you suggest? That I stop the egg turning on Friday afternoon the 16th Day or wait till early in the AM on Day 19? I could camp out in the building but I promised to babysit for 3 children under 4 so the parents could go somewhere with friends for an overnight trip. Fri night to Sat afternoon. I know...crazy...
Let me know what you wise "chicken" sages think.
K......

I have left the turner in and on, totally forgot to "lockdown" a couple hatched before I realized the peeping was from the bator not the brooder. They were fine. I have chicks due to hatch on Friday, just took the turner out, I swear I heard peeping! Hens do not know days, you should be fine leaving them in till Monday morning.

Hello everyone, I am looking for a blue plymouth rock roo, GLW, SLW, or australorps...

I live in greenville outside of Port Jervis in Orange county NY... Must be within 30 minuetes or willing to possibly drive half way

THANKS
-Caleb

I have Australorp eggs for hatching or I can hatch for you. I am in Voorheesville and could meet at JP's North in Greenville if you want. PM me if interested.

Ok fellow nybycers!!! What forms of storage do YOU use when waiting to get an incubator full of eggs? what about temp, turning, and how long do you store and get good results? All advice welcome!!

thanks!!

Ginny

I have an extra turner that I plug in in my basement. Set it and forget it for up to 7 -10 days max. Just add eggs as you collect.

I can't really say but I would go for day 19. It's 1 day extra turning which can't hurt IMO. or 2 days not turning. Better 1 day extra.

I wish you well,

Rancher

I had to open the bator and empty out the chicks. 24 hatched so far. 1 died, 1 was crippled. 2 are still in the bator. 20 in the brooder so far. Bator back closed up. 9 eggs left. See what happens.

it is 95 in the center of the brooder. I moved the thermometer to the edge.

Congratulation on a good hatch.
