Good Lord! Just before my alarm went off this morning, I thought I heard one of the kids (15 and 11) in trouble. Kept hearing, "Mommmmmmyyyyyy! Mooooooommmmmmmmmy!". I finally woke from my slumber, only to discover it was one of our roos who doesn't have the "Cock-a-doodle-do" down. What a sad sounding crow.
My one girl with the saddle I made has been doing very well. She wears the saddle just fine and has rejoined her flock. She even seems to have some feather regrowth. I'll be making a few more for my bare-backed girls shortly. They must be cold with those missing feathers! Brrr!

 

[Tough Old Bird]

Our 3 horses have been spending most days in the stalls. We are gone all day, so if there is a chance of nasty weather, in they stay. Thankfully they are well behaved while stall bound, even the 6 year old. My old man that I lost during the summer preferred to spend all his time inside in winter. He was 13.2, large pony in a roomy 12x12 stall. He was 32. Wish the weather would decide if it was winter or spring, I've had enough of the freeze/thaw/ice crap.

Me, too: if I'm not going to be around for a block of time and the weather is "iffy", in they stay. My guy gets antsy, though, even at his age. He is a mover and a shaker, and tends to pace a circle in his stall. But even he was happy to come back in to a good toweling off, a little grain and more hay this afternoon. Your pony sounds like he knew what was best for him; they often do. We've got a big pony at the barn, too (my friend's). He is tough as nails.

I have also had enough -- roller coaster continues with a quick freeze up after the higher temps tomorrow. Think Spring (but don't hold your breath)!

Nearly done candleing. Looks like a lot of BM's are good. Two CR's, and an Orp. No EE's and just a few Dels. Though to be honest some might have been held too long. The BM's though are good layers so it only stand to reason there would be more of those. 16 total in the incubator. A couple I think have been upside down for the duration so far. Now righted I don't know if they'll make it.

Looks like I'll have to separate the Lav Amer roo and all the EE's to a coop of their own. I've got on EE in with the Dels and now that I think of it she hasn't laid an egg for a few days but I have to keep removing her from a nest box. Broody? I don't know but she does bite when I try to get her out. She has no eggs under her. Not even a wooden one.

Good weather tomorrow temp wise. A day to do what can be done. I'll be running a cord to the BR coop and see if Ii can get them laying. If not they have to go. Funny thing is, he's the only roo without frostbite and that coop is the warmest. Perhaps just not light enough.

He is a little better today his neck feathers are still droopy with old blood ..but it is not fresh today & is healing . Poor Guy !
He may have caught on something yesterday..
My white hen had red speckles everywhere yesterday . Today she had mud speckles on her back ..I wonder what color she will be tomorrow ?
I am going to spray him again & me off course tomorrow ..I always get that blue coat on me

I read a trick for the blueKote and it worked for me. Use a latex glove. Spray the fingertips of the glove and apply where needed. You'll have much more control over where it goes! Worked for me!

Stony, Can you use that Nustock on their combs? I'd be afraid it might chunk and get in their eyes.

This wind today is just ridiculous. The down side of a warm-up: the gales from the south come roaring up the Otisco valley.

With regard to Bluekote chunking up and getting in the (roos') eyes - didn't someone here use it on themselves and get it in their own eyes? Remember reading that last week, but can't remember who it was...javagirl?

Wow is this spring?! At least the birds can free range today.
After last weeks cold temps Buddy the roo got some frost bite on his wattles. I looks like he may have gotten the front half of them wet when he was getting a drink and it froze, poor guy.
The tips of his comb are ok, and the coop is very well ventilated so I know there's no way for moisture to build up in the coop.
Anyone else have this happen with their roos or is Buddy just sloppy? lol

Morning Everyone!
It's finally been getting warmer (I'm sure it won't last too long) the past few days. I moved the silkie chicks to the coop with their momma, roo and my other hen two days ago to see how they would all get along. Thought for sure they'd get pecked at by at least one of the adults, but Nope! Everyone kinda took a good look at them and went on minding their own business. That made me happy. I'm up to 6 silkies now and will definitely be looking to rehome at least 1 or 2 of the chicks that hatched Christmas day when I know who is a hen and who is a roo. If anyone would be interested, they're up for grabs here before I post a listing on CL.

As some of you may remember me mentioning a when I joined this site, I am originally from CT. Came from a small town that I grew up in my whole life. Never thought I would ever leave. We moved to Albany 4 years ago and then last year from Albany to Syracuse. This is my first time ever living in a country setting and I love it and never want to leave it. We have horses and pigs across the street, we started with chickens last spring, then added some rabbits. Well now all my friends back home in CT constantly joke with me asking when I'm going to add goats and micro pigs and maybe even a horse. I always say Oh they're on their way! Don't you worry! One of my friends posted this to my FB wall the other day and I couldn't help but laugh because this is really what I'm turning into...My last trip to CT was supposed to be 5 days long and I cut it short by 2 days to get back up here and tend to all the animals because I didn't think my husband would keep up with it all while I was gone.
