I'm done 11 for 20. I don't understand why some chicks start and then quit. Seems like it's to much to get out of the shell. All were marans too. 4 out of 14 eggs. Some started pipping and then just quit.

3 for 3 on the CR's, 1 for 1 on the orp, 3 for 3 on the Dels. 4 for 14 marans.

It's hard to blame the incubator when only one breed seem to have a problem hatching. I think this will be the only hatch for me, but I do hope most are pullets.

Tabs what have you got in there.


Morgans - you to far away to get another chick from me, but I suggest you brood in the house and give the chick alot of attention.

Anyone close to me that might happen to have one or two new born chicks available? I had only one egg hatch out of a very small batch... its not doing that great, seems to have a weak leg! I just put the poor baby in the brooder... giving sugar water by syringe to see if this help perk up some energy.. I think it would benefit with a friend... please let me know if anyone is near by n has a chic or two... Any advise is appreciated also!!!

If you google spraddle leg in chicks on the 'net, you can actually see some videos of how some people have corrected their own chicks with this problem. I sure hope you can help yours out.

By the way, there is also some good info on the BYC site itself. When I searched for spraddle leg, it came up.

Providing some kind of non-slippery surface / bedding after you "splint" the legs is recommended. It helps the baby get some purchase, but it sounds like it takes a while for them to get used to the device.

I have 4 buckeyes, a few dels, BLRW, Del EE mixes, OE, project blue silver ameraucana, and golden cuckoo marans in the bator.

How dark are the eggs from the Golden Cuckoos? Seems to me that many of the marans varieties lay just about the same darkness of eggs. I could be wrong.

Keep me posted on your Buckeyes. I may like them over the RIR's. for cold weather hardiness and comb.

Candled our eggs last night. 46 of 56 are growing. So far so good.

Cute pictures Stony...they really don't like snow! I was wondering what happened to you this past week. I thought maybe your roosters had pronounced mutiny and thrown you in the plucker.

they walk through snow. Clean paths

with little snow. A few inches they don't even mind. But 16 inches, heck that way over their heads. And being they can fly really well, they do. Sometimes 150 yards at a time.

That's interesting about the Marans low hatch rate.
