NY chicken lover!!!!

not always white. My friend who traps purposely asked last time a month ago when I shot the last one if it was brown or white. As they can be either. But yes sounds like you killed a mink. Weasels prefer living food. I can't get a weasel to walk into a baited trap
I used liver for bait. I put it on all the dead chicks and put each chick next to a trap. I caught it in a condabear. It was around 11:00 in the morning. It came both nite and day.

I caught a weasel Saturday and it already has it's summer coat. It wiped out my entire grow out pen. It was a big male. Took me 3 days to get it but it is dead. I'm mounting it now with my uncle. The difference in a weasels summer coat and minks coat is minks only have a white chin and a weasel have an entire white stomach from chin to tail.
I'm sorry to hear that :( but glad it's dead! My sister had a weasel get into her house before! Her cat chased it out. It was cute but nasty!

yes, brown with a white belly. Today's was white with a little black on it. A young one

Haven't seen weasels, but something crossed the yard in back of the coop. No prints around the coop though. I've seen the prints cutting through before.

I've been setting mouse traps in the runs though and caught two. I saw a big sucker going into the run on evening and have also been setting a rat trap. Haven't caught him yet, but I'll know him when I do.

Buckwheat hatched two today. One fell out of the box and she was on the floor with it. The other got squashed when another hen got into lay and egg. I moved Buckwheat to a crate in the back room.

The RIR and one Orp have given up as their eggs have been taken. The Del hen keeps moving to another box when another hen gets in hers while she's eating. The EE hen is on 6 BM eggs and seems steady where she is.

I have no Broody hen set up. Of course when you've got five or six hens setting where on earth can you put them? Oh and a BM hen was in the nest box on 4 eggs from today. Not sure if she's broody but I took the eggs anyhow.

ta, ta for now. Castle is on,

rancher

there is something very fulfilling about killing a weasel with a .22 with shorts when it isn't trapped then burning the carcass in the outdoor wood boiler.
I've never done it but I'm sure I'd feel the same! Last fall my husband shot a big rat out of the run with a .22 from our living room window (about 15 yards away) he was pretty pleased with himself ;) Of course he gets angry when I go coon hunting with him and he can't shoot the coon out of the tree and then I take the gun and get it with the first shot. It's a known fact that women are a better shot right? ;)

Ugh. What a loss - your birds are amazing.

anyone around buffalo south of buffalo have experience with impacted crop in chicks? my 1-2 week old silkie looks like it has it but crop aint hard at all tried turning upside down to get her to throw up some but nothing seems to eat and drink poos some well the two times I've had her out today. tried to give some olive oil but don't like it put some poly-vi-sol duramycin-10 apple vinegar and probiotic. would take to vet but I don't have the money for that unless someone knows about a fee vet around here or cheap vet like under 20.
