NY chicken lover!!!!

I had a little talk with my hens today about what happens to free loaders! Haha. 10-13 eggs per day out of 30 hens kinda stinks

I realize some of them are over 4 years old but 22 of them are only 1, and they are leghorns! Hopefully they got my drift

Haha! My husband keeps telling my chicks that they need to start earning their keep "or else" ... then he looks toward the kitchen.

Well I just got back a few min ago. they gave me another free silkie and told me these are leghorns. so now instead of the 10 i'm up to 12 chickens. wife is like I thought we was only going to start with 6. I told her it's chicken math she didn't seem too happy but did claim one of the silkies as her along with her bantam we got. I also saw a guy at my daughters school he looked at my chick that I thought was a crop issue and he said since it's off centered it could be an infection and nothing to do with the crop. Told me to get a good sized needle heat it up then cool down with hydrogen peroxide and poke it slightly just enough to break skin and see what comes out if anything. may try to do after I build this bigger brooder. well back to work see ya'll in a bit. josh

Just so you know, the crop is not centered on a chick or an adult, but it's especially obvious on a chick. The crop hangs to the right of the bird's trachea/neck.

This photo is of a parrot, but because the bird is naked, it clearly demonstrates the location of the crop. It is not centered, and on a chick it will bulge out to the side quite a bit! Sometimes it will be so full that the skin shows between feathers/fluff. This is not in of itself a cause for concern.

This thread has photos of a chick with a very full, but normal, crop. The danger is of course if it will not pass naturally. The best time to check is in the morning before they've eaten.. if it's still huge it may be impacted.

Josh, I just saw your thread in the emergencies section re: crop issues, and I think it's just impacted. I responded there, but massage plus a bit of oil has always helped me in these situations. Sometimes it does take a while. In this situation I would not attempt to aspirate via needle unless it's the very last resort, as you may do more damage than good.

anyone around buffalo south of buffalo have experience with impacted crop in chicks? my 1-2 week old silkie looks like it has it but crop aint hard at all tried turning upside down to get her to throw up some but nothing seems to eat and drink poos some well the two times I've had her out today. tried to give some olive oil but don't like it put some poly-vi-sol duramycin-10 apple vinegar and probiotic. would take to vet but I don't have the money for that unless someone knows about a fee vet around here or cheap vet like under 20.

With all due respect it is best NOT to treat for something when you don't know what the problem is. Lets start with some questions.

1. What have you been feeding them. Chicks are babies and should not be fed anything other than chick starter feed and water. They need nothing else.

2. If you suspect an impacted crop do not try to feed it more of anything. The highlighted sentence is not clear. Does the chick eat and drink? Does the chick poop? Look at an impacted crop as a full stomach. Trying to feed it more is just adding to the amount already in there.

My most obnoxious cockerel was slated to take a trip to Camp Crock-Pot this morning, as he has to go. Apparently today is his lucky day, though, because he ended up getting a temporary stay of execution. They usually zone out when hanging with their head downwards for a few moments. Not this one. He kept struggling and trying to latch onto me even after several minutes, and managed to turn himself around in his improvised feed bag restraint. As I want things to be as smooth and calm as possible, I finally informed him that today was not the day, and put him back with the others until I can get Alan to make me a good cone. I know you can buy them already made or use a traffic cone or good bleach bottle, but I'm married to a welder - I want a GOOD cone.
