NY chicken lover!!!!

Wish my DH would do this. I have had to put down two chickens and just had to grit my teeth and do it. kills me every time. Did it for a chick also and still have nightmares. My hubby won't do it no matter what. Funny thing - he isn't even a vegetarian like me /sigh.

I wish someone here that would 'do the deed' when needed lived near me but y'all are too far away! =(

I also must do the deed at our house too. Chicks, chickens, predators. Ugh. It is what it is.

My Easter hatch went bad. Put the eggs into the bator I use as a hatcher and had a temp spike. Didn't think it was too long but apparently it was. Opened the eggs today and all are done. So, 18 eggs set, 0 hatched.

Ok, so now I have another type of bird to look up.  Maybe a new favorite?  Who knows.  My current favorites are
the Ameracuanas and the EE's as well as the Jahurns.
In all fairness the Red Stars should be my favorites as they are sweet birds that cause no troubles, have a high feed
to egg conversion and are pretty.  But the Ameracaunas are such eye candy and the Jahurns are such troublemakers... 

Yeah I have to get some ameracuanas or ee's once these chicks grow up wife wants colored eggs. I personally like the marking on the blrw saw some nicked colored ones in the sell forums. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/746009/blrw-day-old-chicks. Personally the dark red/blue they have pics of there. Don't know what color eggs I just like the look of them.

Figured out my predator... 99% sure it was a fisher. Big question - I know the fishers can get in the coops and cause mayhem, but are they stealthy at taking out unpenned chickens that can run/fly away? Fox I know can do it, but coons seem to prefer to get them when they are penned up. I really need to move my prisoner chickens to the electronet area ugh.

Some of the stuff on fishers says that they make patrols and make rounds at the same place every few weeks, but how true is that? would hate to keep the girls locked up indefinitely until I can make room for them, but if I have to,I have to. Are fishers easy to trap? some websites say they are protected, so I guess that's probably out.

Call the dec they could tell you if protected and probably how best to live trap it and transport it to a different area if it's aloud. I'll check they're site real fast.

When I went to the coop this morning, I found my SS hen, Lady dead. There does not appear to be anything wrong with her except of course, she is dead. They had a lovely time yesterday, a full day of free ranging, so at least her last day was good. I won't be doing any dissection, since gloving up and carrying her body out to the wood pile to await burial was a good step for me. I have always weaseled out of touching dead creatures, so baby steps.

If it were my chick I would have put it out of it's misery as soon as food withdrawal yielded no results. And I would have cried the whole time I was doing it. Probably couldn't have even watched myself do it, actually. That is the down side to those cute little chicks. They don't all make it, no matter how much we want them to. And sometimes pulling them through something odd like this just yields a whole life of problems (albeit a shortened life) (Been there, done that...hated every minute)

I must confess I don't have time to deal with sickly chicks or chickens. Not good for them or me. So the minute I see a problem I don't prolong either of our agony and put them down right away. New born chicks are very fragile and pass on quickly.
