My first intro to the band ..Was Blue on Black .

The current incu hatch day 20.  Two Dels, on lave amer/ee and one CR.  Pips on others hopefully tomorrow things will start hopping.

I have a Blue EE sitting on 6 Birchen marans eggs and a Birchen marans sitting on 4 EE/Amer eggs.  I have a Del hen not doing well on 3 Del eggs and a Blk EE/Amer hen sitting on 6 Birchen marans.

Now I have to say the Blue ee , the BM and the EE are sitting tight.  The Del not so much.  I find her in other boxes and off her eggs.  She and the Black EE are in the same coop but the Blk EE is very tight to the nest. Always the same nest I haven't seen her off the nest.

I do know when the broodies are off the nest as there is a BIG pile of poop in the yard.

Man talking about a mix up lol. What none of the other chickens wanted any of the del's eggs? While reading that all I could think of was "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts.."

Let her sit on wooden eggs and when your chicks hatch in the 'bator, slip a couple under her at night and remove the wooden eggs. You could even slip the broken eggs under if you think she will notice they are gone.
That is a good idea, I didn't even think of that.
I'm torn between wanting her to hatch some since I'm not sure what my hatch rate from the incubator will be, but also a little apprehensive about having even more chicks right now...ugh at least it's a good time of year for selling chicks.

Morning all!

An update on my first hatch
big_smile.png

I have 7 chicks in the brooder, 1 still in the bator. I had 1 chick die after pipping. I have two that pipped yesterday morning, who I have assisted but are stuggling, I don't expect them to make it. I have two more eggs that have internally pipped but I'm pretty sure they died after that...I'll give them til tonight after 8pm (that'll be day 24) and then I am done with the hatch.

So I have 4 D'Uccles, a blue Ameraucana, 2 black Austrolorps, and a Penedesenca (which I think is actually a black austrolorp because he looks just like the other two...

I will be looking to sell these chicks in about two weeks since I can not keep them and raise them myself, I prefer them to go to local people who know what they are doing and will take good care of my babies. If anyone might be interested please PM me...when the time comes I will post an ad on craigslist and on the buy/sell/trade forum.

Update on hatch.

As for dry hatching POO! This is not a good hatch at all.

The EE's usually do much much much better. So far 1/10 that is NOT good. The Dels 4/8 with one nearly out. The CR's 3/5. one that I thought was an orp is a CR.

The marans,

0/8. One was working and out of frustration I took it out and cracked the shell all the way around. I do know these guys have the hardest shell of all the chickens. That is without added calcium.

so the count is 1 EE, 3 CR's, and 5 Dels. This is day 21 though so being that they were set late in the day there may still be hope.

Take care folks, lots to do,

Just picked up some Melanistic Pheasants yesterday. I love them! Put them in with the Mandarin ducks. Hose was frozen yesterday, hoping it thaws out today so I can clean up! Hello Spring, where are you?
