NY chicken lover!!!!

J-
So glad your daughter's doing well. As well as to be expected anyway! Children are so strong.

I remember someone mentioning VetRX before. Don't know who. OK, I SWEAR by this stuff now. I have a hen (1 yr old production hen) who was fine 2 days ago. I noticed she kind of sneezed a few times. I figured something got in her nostril. Last night when I counted the flock, I was missing her. I finally found her huddled in a corner on the floor of the second half of the coop. She just stood there with her eyes half closed, GASPING for air. I let her be, figuring let nature take it's course. I didn't think she'd make the night through. This morning she was in a nest box, eyes closed, still gasping for air with every breath. I went to TSC to pick up some kind of antibiotic, or something that would help her. Was very confused on what to get and was about to leave. I spotted this VetRx, and the bottle said it helps respiratory ailments. Got it home and warmed it like it said. I went out and rubbed some in her comb, wattle, a little in her mouth and around her nostrils. 2 minutes later, she was sitting with her mouth closed (normally), looking at me like, "What???". Several droplets of fluid came out of her nostrils. She did start to gasp a bit again, but not nearly as bad as before. She actually got off the roost and drank some water. I'll dose her again once or twice today, but I have to say, I am AMAZED with this stuff!
Keep your fingers crossed she continues!

jlaw....

glad your daughter is making progress. You gotta love those crazy camera app's. My son and I crack up over the images we get on his iPod.

Rancher....

Sorry about the lost hatch; how awful.

Also, as frustrating as that must be about the job down the tube, things often work out for a reason in a way we don't understand until we're down the road a bit. I'll pray that something good comes your way soon. You deserve it.

Cass....

Also sorry to hear about your hen turned Red-tail Hawk chow. Seems to be a lot of predation losses that occur to people's flocks here. It's sobering!

As for a little coop update from TOB:

Today the hubby and I mixed 19 bags of cement by hand to pour wheelbarrow load by wheelbarrow load into the dug-out forms which will form the base of my storage area, to be built on to the coop. Sounds huge, right? It's not! It's just the grade is steep and to get things level, we really needed to dig some deep trenches. Anyway, muscles and hands are sore, but it's another task done!

How about a Saturday afternoon laugh...someone posted this on my Facebook page and I LOLed! I "censored" the bad word...

Four of them are just to sweet to be guilty. They're just so sweet you want to eat them up.
Just saying hi from Rochester!

Rochester? Wasn't he the guy in the Topper movies?

TOB, don't worry your birds are doing fine. I force myself not to think about the loss on the others as it's to heavy to carry.

what's the story
Glory

Long day for me. Little girl and I went to a local farm creamery open house this morning, bought farm-made cheese, back home then onto the 1.5 hour drive to Tab & Travis' place. Lucky girl, she slept the drive up. Picked up 8 more chicks - 2 olive eggers, 2 del, 1 buckeye and 3 Marans. Enjoyed the visit and catching up with friends. Little girl didn't want to leave her new friends and had a meltdown of epic proportions. New personal best for her. Thank goodness hubby had his iPad in the car with some Disney shows to stop the screaming. Chicks are all happily running around the tank stretching legs and drinking. And it seems we got a loud-mouth in the bunch, quite a loud peep for a little booger.

Today was a See Eagle day ...For us
