Hi all. New to the forum and new to raising chickens. I just got a 4 chicken coop and I'm working on getting some contacts to start building my flock. I'm right outside of East Aurora, south of Buffalo.

Since we're only going to have a few, I wanted to get four different breeds. I was looking at a Wyandotte, Australorp, and Red Comet. I wanted to get an Ameraucana too if I could find one.

My family and I are going out of town at the end of April, so we wanted to wait until we get back in May to get them.

We were hoping to get chicks, or very young pullets.

I'm getting ready to set some eggs. Hopefully things will turn out better this time. (the light over the brooder went out and I lost 11 chicks) Though I don't have the breeds you mention.

My SLW roo was dead when I went to the barn. He seemed a little droopy yesterday and DH said he was gone this morning. I was going to try and hatch chicks this spring if I ever got any eggs. Now I'm not.

I am sorry for your loss. Was he not with any hens? I have two hens but can't afford another rooster. Mine are with my BR. I bought one of those wooden nest boxes at TSC and they are just to small. Her butt hangs over the end. Fortunately there are plenty of shavings and when the eggs drops it doesn't break. Though it doesn't happen often. I really should take it down.

TOB, looks to be three Del pullets. Did you want them all? There appears to be two CR's and the Lavender in the picture looks to be a pullet too.

I think the marans are two for two. I intend to keep the pullets and give away the roos. There also appears to be a Del roo too.

I got a line on a Comet, Wyandotte, and Australorp from Craigslist. I'm just hoping they're still available in May. This is going to be a long month of waiting...

This reminds me of the convo I had with my son the other day...he's going to be 7 and he's an animal lover like his momma. Now we have a dog, a cat, 2 rabbits, they each have their own beta fish, the chickens, and soon coming are the ducklings. He WANTS a bearded dragon, turtles, a parrot, and lord knows what else. Well every time he comes to me with another pet that he wants, I always tell him, "Kyle, when you are out of my house and living on your own, you can have whatever animal YOU want!" For the past three years he's responded with tears in his eyes saying "But I don't want to move out" So the other day he comes to me and says "I wish I could have my own parrot" and I gave him the speech again about how he can whatever he wants when he's older and living on his own. So this time instead of him saying he never wants to move out, he said he never wants to move away from me. So I asked "You're going to live with me forever??" His response: "Well, maybe not live WITH you, but is no one is living next door to us still, maybe I'll build a house next door to you and be your neighbor. Or maybe the neighbors (he used her name) across the street will decide they don't want their house (they live in a renovated barn and have at least 20 acres) anymore and I can move over there because I want a LOT of pets!"

So great, I'm eventually going to be living across the street from my son, keeper of the zoo!

Thats what I keep hearing/reading. The bearded dragon came up because he originally wanted a chameleon. (I think he thought it was really going to change color to every single background it was up against like they show in cartoons) I informed him this is NOT the case. AND after doing some reading, I told him it's not the best pet for a 7yr old. They are difficult to take care of because you have to make sure the heat and humidity in the tank are at the right temp, etc etc etc and they don't like to be held. He wants something he can actually take out of the cage on his own and handle himself. I'm still contemplating if it's something I should invest in for this upcoming birthday or if I should wait it out a couple more years.

A bearded dragon does make a great pet, but I have a russian tortoise that I've had for over a year and they make THE BEST pets. Quiet, easy to care for and eats lettuces. Mine is spoiled with Wegman's organic spring mix. Highly recommend.

Nah - I'm in Delmar at the moment. I think I'm a little too hillbilly for the humorless scold. I really should lay it on thick and discuss whacking my birds, just to see the reaction, because I'm evil.

Welcome! I have Australorps and love them so far. Heads up, though, they were hard to come by and sold out quickly.

Broodies, Broodies, everywhere....not a hen to lay. An over exaggeration, of course, but lots of grumpy broody hens.
