NY chicken lover!!!!

Tell her to work for CVS around here, and she can be my partner. I need a chicken-obsessed partner, even if she does like Polish.

At the moment I'm working with a humorless scold, which sucks the fun out of it - I'd rather talk chickens all day!

Our surviving bee girls are doing well, and were out foraging yesterday. They were even coming back with pollen from someplace, ,so they'll be fine. I'm getting a nuc from Betterbee this spring to replace the hive we lost, and we'll be back in business.

Scold!! I so love the word. So much better than malcontent!

Winner winner chicken dinners! It took us three hours from start to finish, mostly because we ended up skinning instead of plucking (we couldn't keep the water hot enough - note to self: get an outdoor setup) and it got dark out. It'll be much quieter in the morning. We had three hatchet jobs and three cuts. Alan is now a cone convert, as he appreciated how quickly and peacefully they bleed out. The last roos standing are the Captain (who appears to appreciate the sudden lack of competition and not having his butt chased) and the Easter Egger (and, of course, my little squeaky-toy bantie).

Rancher, your Dels are amazing dual-purpose birds. Those bad boys dressed out nice and heavy, and they're only ten months. There is a lot of meat on those suckers.

I'm keeping one of them out to cook this weekend. The rest are going into the freezer.

Rancher, I would love the lav if TOB don't want her :) now that all the chicks are getting bigger it looks like we have many roos! Out of 50ish chicks I think there's at least 15 roosters! Ahh. So if anyone needs roosters I have RIR,Del,BO,and possibly a couple Brahmas. The Brahmas are hard to tell.

Well hmm how early do hens start to brawwk or roos try to crow? I was sitting here watching my chicks when I hear a sound almost like someone was strangling a crow or something. It happened for a sec scared all the chicks. They all just stood still like I did it. then a few min later hear the start of another strangled crow. They range from ages ( guessing here ) 4ish to 6ish weeks old. Good old ts some marked down some not when I bought them on march 22. Older ones would be silkies and the leghorn. youngers are the reds and the bantam.

Not turkey vultures they are black around here & bigger than these .
Someone down the road said their was a nest of bald eagles down there last year ..These could be immature ...ones seems to be about 4 of them ..
I am on the watch for them now ..as they have come close to the chickens at least 3 times that I know of .
Roosted above them one time ...flew low near them 2 times ..the shed seems to be the split off point ..
The chickens go on the side where the house is & huddle near the house & the eagle goes on the other side of the shed .
