NY chicken lover!!!!

This yard is the same way! I struggled to plant more than half the plants I planted last summer here. I look at my rock driveway and feel like at some point this whole acre of land was nothing but rock! Not to mention the huge rocks I've had to dig out of a hole in order to plant a tree or perennial I wanted in a certain spot!

Forgot to ask, is anyone attending the Auburn TS animal swap this weekend? I saw an ad on CL and was curious if anyone was attending.

Cass,

I think that absolutely stinks about the possibility of the teachers throwing the towel in on the eggs after only 3 hours w/o power. It almost sounds like too easy an excuse, rather than a real reason. I hope they'll reconsider. How disappointing for the kids, and how awful for the developing chicks to just be discarded.

Sorry to hear this. I'd be sighing (and angry) too. I hope you can change their mind. Good luck.

I stained most of the coop today. Hubby got the shingles completed on the storage section. Hooray.

Hope the rain can hold off long enough for me to finish the stain after I get back from taking my mom in for a cardiology app't tomorrow a.m.

Will share a pic or two tomorrow if I get a chance.

Good night, everyone.

I feel sorry for this silkie I have it not only gets the bloody foot but I come home tonight from work and find the thing has poop down it's wing I guess it was laying under the roost bars in brooder.

Well I got my vet to give me some Amoxciilin .. With Henicillins help with the dosage ..
For a chicken 250 mg ..twice a day for 7 days
So she got her first dose ...caplets ..
I Put the powder in a little milk ...mixed it up good ...put some bread in it to sop it up ...She gobbled all it up .
She is getting quite tame from being in the house & all this attention ..
I dont have to worry about what to do with the egg she lays ...She eats it ..Recycle ! LOL

Well we went and did it. We got ducks! 15 of them! They are 4 weeks old and quite big already. They are the cutest. Very skiddish little buggers, I hope that changes soon. We got 5 Mallards, 5 Rouen and 5 Pekin. My husband really has his heart set on Calls but we can't find any near by.

Yikes, Cass, all those eggs! I'm sure you have made every effort to contact the teachers as their egg consultant. But having worked in an elementary school, they will do whatever they have figured is most expedient, and having eggs sit for a while that could do horrible things, like be unhygienic or explode--would have them clearing that experiment up quick. We know from Tabs recent power outage that there is a good chance the eggs can hatch. Keep us posted.
Tsc in Auburn sounds nice, but not with my brother...
I hear you about getting old. It takes me way longer to get stuff done, and lots of things get pushed down the priority list. Housecleaning is never high on that list anyway, but I have to do it.
Trading wild leeks for use of my sons truck to go get mulch is high on the list for today.

Poor little thing.....low man on the roosting pole, so to speak.

You guys are sure adventuresome! Good luck with the baby quacks!

I'm feeling it this morning after the stain-athon on the coop yesterday. Even my hands hurt. We have hemlock boarding up and much of it is very rough. The stain really had to be worked in with gusto on some spots. Only a small piece left to do. Hope the rain can hold off 'til this afternoon. Good luck with your mulch load getting checked off your to-do list!

Morning all. Looks to be a beautiful day today and I actually have the day off! Go me! Have to clean waterers today.

Rancher---I do barter and trade but you are too far away from me to do so. I barter eggs for hot peppers from a local guy who grows them organically. They are really good and he loves my eggs. I make hot pepper jam from them as well and give him some jars in return for the peppers. I figure if anything catastrophic happens, I can always barter or trade egss and chicken for whatever I might need!!!

Cass---I would call the school directly and talk to the head of the dept or the person who arranged for all the eggs from you. The teachers might not understand that this is not a pull the plug moment. Its also a great lesson for the students to understand that just because there is a circled date on the calendar, it doesnt mean that chicks will hatch on that date. This is a perfect learning opportunity that I would hope the teachers would take advantage of.

Mderby--congrats on your duckehs!

My little tater tots downstairs are growing like weeds and I am loving the coloring on the heritage rir's. So very different from my hatchery stock. They are a funny bunch, incessently curious about what you are doing. They are getting along well with the silkie chicks even though they are starting to get bigger than they are. I hope it stays that way until I can sell the silkies.

Let the terrorists and divas out yesterday. Dont know what is in the woods lately but they have been tearing it up something fierce! The ground looks like a war zone back there with all their digging. Its good for me though as it cuts down on feed!!! They are laying like gangbusters now and my egg customers are very happy. Had one friend buy 5 dozen yesterday. Another 3 to be delivered today down at my daughters job today. At least these cheeps are earning their keep and keeping the weeds and bugs under control.

Enjoy the day everyone!
