NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok I need help. Don't think one of my newest Silkie chicks is doing all that great. Yesterday when they were out in the run, I noticed the smallest of the 5 kind of distancing himself from the rest. He would just stand there and sleep. Not interested in anything like the others, however he would eat and drink when new food was placed in the run or in their brooder when I put them back in the shed at night. Today I went to check on them and he's even worse, barely walking around, always "sleeping" but he does chirp, he drank the water when I placed him near it and he did eat a little this morning. But the other were trampling all over him. So I made him his own little box with food and water and he hasn't moved since I put him in it this morning from the spot he started in. He's still chirping, still breathing, what should I do!?!?!

I'm wondering if he somehow did something to his neck. He can't seem to keep his head up. Don't think he's going to last much longer :-(

He sounds real sick ...did you try feeding iit a little scrambled egg ? or some electrolite water ?

Just a thought for those of us who have too many eggs. There are breeds that don't lay as many eggs as some we have. My only problem with that is when the cold weather comes and everyone seems to take a break. Even my Dels.

I suppose white birds have taken a hit as they are easily spotted on the ground or by air.

My poor Del hen, it looks like someone got in there with her and broke an egg, which means I have to pull them all and toss them and either let her break brooding or move her to somewhere to start again. I don't really need her to hatch but it would be nice.

Woke up this am to 3 ducks walking down the road. It looked like they were going to check out our "puddle" in the side yard, but then they changed their mind, turned around and walked back in the direction they came from.
They weren't the wild type, a very light colored mallard?

Rancher do the jostaberries have roots yet?!

Lynzi, your chick might have wry neck. One of my silkies had it bad and it took a week of forcing liquid vitamins with an eye dropper and holding the head up so it could eat and drink. They don't always make it, but the one I had recovered fully and was spoiled rotten after being cuddled for a week. It started off with the head dragging between the legs and running backwards, screaming the whole time. I was off on a work trip at the time and my daughter was so upset thinking she did something wrong that I tried to save it so she wouldn't feel guilty.

There are several good threads on BYC with good instructions for using the liquid baby vitamins without iron. Worth a try whatever it is. I treated in the morning before going to work, when I got home and before bed. I read that silkies are more prone to this than other breeds and this one got a good knock on the head when it panicked and ran headfirst into the side of the brooder.

Quote: LOL ok, guess there isn't anything strange about my girl then.
Mean Marge doesn't take any crap from any of the younger roosters and even the Alpha Roo (Hic) gives her her space. She's a handful even when she's in a good mood and if she ever goes broody? Well, she'll be sitting on 1000000 eggs by the end of 21 days, cuz I am not brave enough to reach under her to get the extra eggs laid after the clutch was set....I just don't have long enough gloves or short enough hair. (yes, she pulled my hair once when I bent over in front of where she was roosting to get something from the floor) So yeah, Hens can take on a roo...Mean Marge even wins, most of the time.
Different than mine, she is about the sweetest one I've got. She hasn't gone broody or anything tho. These 6 were all raised together, so they all know each other. Sorry to laugh, but that just sounds funny that she pulls hair :D

I have a leghorn that does the same. Plus SHE has spurs...
funny. As long as she doesn't use them, lol, bad enough if roos do.

Quote: I am going to wait a little bit to add my two flocks together ..My older hens can be mean .
My babies ( went outside last night..(they were not happy ..they screamed !) (I put them under the coop)
Our coop is raised now so there is more than enough room under there ...for 2 little babies
( the space is about 30 inches high x 4 ft x 4 ft )It is enclosed
I am hoping to put them in with the main flock after we get some babies from cass

ChickPrincess
I was wondering how you handle the food ? The babies are still on Baby food right ?
And the hens are on layer ?

O
Aww look at this little poofy girl! Having problems with my camera (ie, can't find the charger grr) so didn't get too many pics yet.. but this one is just a little ball of poof!!
Ohhh Myyyy.....she's so beautiful and poofy!!! Wow the boys are far behind the girls in any sort of poof!!! Is she from the Alien Roo hatch?!?

Any ideas what my "Exotic Mystery" chick could be?? It's got dark legs and 4 toes. I picked up a replacement for my Mottled Houdan that passed this week and this little one was in the mix as the free exotic along with Red Star Chix. Sooo.....any guesses???
