chicken salad? soup?

That is a relief!
I'm pretty sure mine is a raven rather than a crow. Fantail instead of wedge tail, and a more throaty low call instead of the higher pitched "caw caw" of a crow. Also my black bird is HUGE.
Either way, I'm happy that both of us have a black bird that chases hawks away, and I am so glad to know they don't bother the chickens. Thank you!

Ravens are larger and have an almost "shaggy" appearance on the breast instead of the smooth feathers of the crow. Ravens have very thick bills and you are right: they do NOT sound like crows.

I don't believe they'll predate on your adult chickens, but I wouldn't rule out an opportunistic attack on chicks or small youngsters if they thick they can pull it off. They're wicked intelligent.

Took a ride out to Camillus today for the shipping crates. Was only able to fit two in my car. I'll take another right out tomorrow for 2 more and then start building over the weekend. Someone is eager to get the project going....

I looked up the listing ...They are really nice ..we might check some out tomorrow too ..Looks like your chicken approves LOL

TAB...
Love your sono baby pics! Seems like yesterday I was ooohing and ahhhing over my babies' sono shots. Amazing technology!

RANCHER...
Sounds like a decent hatch count. How many Marans? Hope you got a few, at least! I will send you a PM shortly to discuss picking up the pullets next week.

LYNZI...
Glad you got some crates. The Barred Rock hen is lovely. Good luck getting the project started.

Crazy afternoon here again, with two boys in two separate baseball games in two separate locations.

Managed a few small tasks on the coop. The inside is ready for my birds! We need to finish some work on the outside so there are no noisy jobs while the birds are here. The pen remains as the biggest "to do". Pics soon.

Good night!

As he is now the top bird ...he thinks its his place now .LOL Show him you are the top bird ...Every once in a while challenge him ...Do a run at him ! Put him in his place . Stare him down with stink Eye ! Dont let him mount a hen in front of you ...Etc
I tried this once with a really nasty roo that I had who moved in uninvited (at that time all my chickens were uninvited), but he had been allowed to behave that way for too long and eventually I had to give him away to change his environment. Apparently in his new home he's very docile. Point being, nip that in the bud! Spurs hurt! I'm not sure why my current roosters are so well behaved. I raised them all from chicks, and I never have to do any of this stuff. They're both very sweet, and in the right mood will climb into my lap to be petted. I don't knock them off hens when they mate in front of me, I don't keep them back from food, I don't pick them up if they're not feeling like it...and neither one has so much as looked at me funny. They're both great with children too. I think that they just know that they're chickens, and we're humans, and that's that, so there's no need to treat us as other roosters or as predators.

We have ravens too, and they don't bother the chickens, but they will get right in the run if they can and walk around with them, which I hate because sometimes the chickens get lice from them and I have to do a round of dusting, and they will eat chicken feed if they can get to it. They don't hurt my birds, though, and hawks and owls really do hate them. Like TOB said, though, they're very intelligent. So far I haven't lost any chicks to them, but at one point they did figure out how to get in the coop, and they'd just stroll right in and steal my eggs.
Anyone ever had any EE's with this kind of pattern?

Pretty Close!?!?!
I have three Easter Eggers. They really do come in lots of colors. This is Plum, a chick I got from featherz for one of my broodies last year: This is Chickpea, one of my other ones: Here's Pepper, my 'normal' colored girl: And here's Thistle, who was my first Easter Egger, another 'normal' one, and that's Plum with her, actually: Sorry for the super long post. I've been dealing with the loss of my best friend and haven't been on in days, so I had to catch up!
