NY chicken lover!!!!

My first Egg! We picked up an older girl from another farm who I found on craigslist "free to good home." She's been a great mom to our 6 week old chicks and has taught them how to scratch, eat stuff other than feed and best of all roost (they have been huddling up in a corner instead).

She also seems to like all the fresh grass our mobile coop offers since her old run (though large and full with goodies) didn't have any fresh greens. I'm so excited and happy to finally have chickens, I even let the cranky hubby have the first 2 for breakfast. I finally got to eat one this morning. Mmm Mmm Good!

My cranky "I hate chickens" husband is even excited and has been checking the coop for eggs. I never thought I'd even see him set foot in that pasture let alone the coop!

Wow, thats odd for her! LOL She was the one always being chased around here, thats why I kept her and my silkie roo cooped up most of the time.

Maybe she saw a chance to be on top for once! All these young and impressionable young ones.

I know she can have quite the attitude when broody. She's a protective momma.

I'm hoping she'll go broody for me soon. I'm collecting her eggs for now, I'll have an incubator made in the next few days and then once I have 5 or 6 of them for the incubator I'm hoping she will go broody on a few more.

Speaking of incubators I seem to have everything I need with the exception of the thermostat, any suggestions on one from people who have already made their own incubators?

We made one from an old dorm frig. It has 2 light bulbs, 2 computer fans, and a thermostat. My DH built a 3 tiered shelf that holds egg racks and moves up or down to turn the eggs.

Have to ask but how many times did Rancher try to pay for tickets with baby chicks??

Sounds like a good time, too bad i'm so far away or I could host it. Our problem is water running low though in summers due to stupid well grrr. But i'm hopeing to get enough over time to fix that. Got so bad last year we played the yellow mellow game and did laundry at mother inlaws along with dishes. We have 5 gal water jugs we keep filled just incase some for toilet and some for dishes.

If I'm able to get off for this if it happens, I just bought a new grill I could bring up and some grilling items.

I brought chicks last year and one was the only Lavender I had. Plus hatching eggs. This year I'll bring a surprise chicken box. Inside will be every rooster chick that hatched.
