NY chicken lover!!!!

I see their are quite a few NY Chicken Lovers and some close to me I am in Ava NY just outside of Boonville NY home and am about 15 miles North or Rome NY. If anyone near me has any laying hens they would like to part with I am looking for some right now I have babies who aren't laying and would really like some eggs now. Chicks I have are Buff Orpingtons, Black Cochin, White Cochin, Aracauna, Red Star, Black Star, Blue Andalusian, Partridge Rock, Dark Cornish, Speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, and Columbian Wyandotte ended up with a mixture. I have 50 acres so lots of land to build coops on.
Welcome Nutty,
I'm practically a neighbor................................I live in Westernville !! I have a few hens available, shoot me a pm.

TOB---wide side up. It allows the birds to cover their feet and keep them warm, especially during winter. I cannot tellyou how many coop pics I have seen in which the narrow part of the board is up or people used 2x2. Not comfortable for the birds nor good for keeping feet warm in winter.

Cooked a couple dozen eggs up for all the cheeps today. Miserable rainy day today but they did come running out from under the coop for their treat. Even the babies gobbled down theirs. Good way to use up some eggs as well. My little hurt silkie is getting a little better. Not hobbling as much. It has been resting in the brooder with its sibling and its quiet downstairs so that helps. Hoping for a full recovery soon.

Enjoying my day off by doing nothing but watching a series and crotcheting. Started another blanket. My cat has spent the day next to me on a blanket sleeping. She has missed me with all the working I have been doing. Back at it again tomorrow.

Thanks, Pharm....and thanks featherz. Sounds like I definitely goofed! It took me a little while to figure out, but watching them wobble eventually clued me in.

Glad you had an "off" day. Some times it's just perfect doing not much of anything.

Nothing chicken related to say today, but I got a lot of my plants into the garden. Figured it was a good time since it is supposed to rain on and off all week. I have hose enough to go from house to garden, but it gets darn heavy dragging it across the grass. First Ray put up the fence so the chickens can start forgetting where the nice soft soil is to dig in. (My lawn is hard clay, so they are always looking for a soft spot to dig in. Never occurs to them to use the pile of soil I put by the chicken coop. Bird brains, I swear they are all bird brains)

A few more pics of the girls. Can't believe it's already 2 weeks tomorrow that I got the first 4 pullets from Rancher. They've already got a routine going, which is nice.

Here's the Delaware pullet. Looks like she's lifting her skirt! Check out those legs, woo-hoo!

The Marans, Columbian Rock (who has lately been challenging Helen the Marans for boss role) and the Delaware sweetie.

Lavender Orp, chilling with my son. This one loves a good snuggle.

The Coronation Sussex is just starting to show some color in her hackles and tail. Can't wait to see how she turns out.

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I can't believe how quickly weekends go by.

Tob yes it's flat side up but let me suggest using these.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-...le-Shear-Hanger-LUS44Z/100375088#.UZmaD7HD-70

I used these on my three roosts so 6 all together. I did have a problem where they didn't lay flat due to 2x4's warping but I just added a screw to each high point in the corners. My only concern is they seem to be built for 4x4 or 3.5x3.5's. ( I hate how boards are 1/2 inc shorter than they should be). So I worry about the chickens cutting feet on the braces if they go right next to wall. So far I haven't had a problem. I already figured if I did I could stack some 2x4's like 6 inches long up at wall to cover the bracer. The bracer lets you remove roost to clean under it or mix up the floor some. If I rember right you said you used something like this but the board is flipped the other way.

Also I figure if the 2x4's start to sag I can always add a brace in middle. I have them spaning 7' 7" right now.

BTW I got this idea from someone on forums earlier this year. Don't want to take credit for it.

Cass : Well we got home safely ! Totallly Tired at 11:00 . We stopped for a bit .
The Chicks are still in the bin ...with a heat lamp ..on them ..during the day ..
I hear the babies screaming ...We have them down cellar ...I go down ...Im like it is cold down here ..My son had the window open - DUH
they were cold ..Had him close the window ...put the heat more directly on them ..
The sumatras are very alert ...They are al ready looking up to escape the bin ....We have named them tire track & skid mark...For the black strips they have on their chest .
the black Americiania s - is bruiser...has a black ring around the eye , Spock -has spock like colors around the eyes .
Will they loose those patterns they have now ? & become a solid color ?

Im somewhat overwhelmed by 11 chicks ..they are growing on me though .
Thank you for them .Deborah
