Why people think an Amish person  is anymore righteous than non Amish is beyond me.   Though I wonder if I dressed the part if people would buy my eggs.   People can be so gullible. 

I go to the regional market here and folks are going ga, ga over the little old man and his wife selling egg for $2.50 and $3.00 a doz.  What they don't know is the "commercial" farm they own is the same one that sells eggs to the school I volunteer at and their paying more for the same eggs the stores are selling for less.   

You have to watch and ask questions.  I have a friend who buys his apples directly from the wholesaler that folks are the market buy theirs from and are only reselling them.  Folks need to look and ask if it's a local farm and locally grown. 

I agree just ask where you stuff is coming from.

Morning all.  This heat and humidity is killing me.  II think I got too dehydrated at work yesterday as my legs cramped up real bad last night.  Thank goodness dh took care of all the cheeps because I just couldnt.  Starting off my morning with lots of water.  I will probably be hauling lots of water to the cheeps today as well as they drank lots yesterday. 

I am having dh put down the one silkie chick today.  All my efforts to rehab her are not working.  I suspect she got pecked on the head by one of the rir chicks when they were in the playpen together and has neurological dammage.  She drags her one leg and has balance issues now and just isnt moving all that much.  I gave her two weeks of rest and vitamins and such but to no avail.  She only recovered up to the point she is at now and its no life for a chicken.  I dont trust myself to do the deed quickly and cleanly so dh gets the job.  One of the tougher aspects of having critters. 

Going to put the rir tots in the diva coop tonight after dark.  Trying to integrate them again with the girls.  If Betty gives them a hard time, I may just go ahead and put her in freezer camp.  She is psychotic anyways, not laying and killed any eggs I put under her last year when she went broody, right when they were due to hatch.  She is at the bottom of the pecking order. 

It seems the chipmunks have outwitted my dh.  They no longer run the back yard and the stone wall in the back yard but are out front now, where he cant shoot at them.  I told him thats what he gets for shooting off all the dumb ones.  So far they are staying out of the coops.

The upcoming rir boys thought they would like to try taking a piece of flesh out of my hands yesterday.  Imaginge their surprise when I pecked them on their head and then yanked them out of the brooder box and held them upside down under my arm.  Message was received loud and clear.  I reached in again later and they behaved themselves.  I am hoping they are nice roos when they finish growing up.  Uncle Bill (the largest one) is going to be a very big boy I think. 

Day off today and my feet can use it.  My backyard poultry magazine came so its a good excuse to sit and read for a while.  Stay cool everyone.

I definitely plan on keeping them in there. Just isn't looking too promising LOL I even thought about taking the eggs and placing them under my broody but now that she has some and the bator has some, I'd like to see which has the better hatch rate. Especially with this being her first time. She looks like a big turkey out there when she does come out in the evenings, puffing out her feathers at all the other chickens. LOL It's kinda funny. I hope she makes a good mama if these do hatch.

I only paid $12 for them so it's not a big deal. She is a mean broody though, I had to wear gloves to put the eggs under her. She growled and pecked away, nasty little momma haha

I wish I didn't have to work today, I really have nothing to do so I'm sitting at my desk on BYC. I hope they don't monitor internet usage too much lol

This morning I heard some sad little crows coming from the coop with the 6 week olds in it...ugh I need to figure out who it is and either cull or rehome him. I'm pretty sure I have about 5 little roo's in there...I already have 3 full grown roos I don't really want or need another. As it is I want to get rid of my year old orp roo or my year old sebright roo...decisions decisions...

I only paid $12 for them so it's not a big deal. She is a mean broody though, I had to wear gloves to put the eggs under her. She growled and pecked away, nasty little momma haha

I had to lay a dish towel over her and use gloves when ever I had to clean up her cage a bit, replace food/water or if I wanted to candle eggs. She was a mean broody! Stella hasn't minded me petting me her or placing the eggs in there under her YET. Maybe because she's nicest hen and she's used to all of us. That may change soon who knows. We'll see what happens when I start candling her eggs.

My husband makes fun of me while I'm up here working, I have dual screen monitors for work, my laptop open at all times right next to me and my phone. He came up here one day to ask about dinner and said "Do they call you 3-Screen Lindsay at work?" LOL The job I'm doing now I'm so overqualified for and it takes me no time at all to do. Since I'm production I just can't log off when I'm done. So I sit here on BYC until my shift is over. LOL

Is Phyllis sitting on any silkie eggs that she laid or just the ones you bought?

I'm also done what I have to get done pretty quickly, I'm currently searching for a new job...I wish I didn't have to sit at work with barely anything to do when I could be home with the chickens.

She is only sitting on the ones I bought. I have the 2 of them with a rooster that doesn't get the job done so I'm 99.9% sure the silkie eggs aren't fertile. Poor Megachicken has balance issues (he was beat up by the other roo's) so everytime he tries to grab one of the silkies they just run from him and he falls over. It's sad/funny to watch at the same time.

Just a small growl when I'm pushing her around, but never threatens to be mean. Little girl looks forward to going out to the barn, because now there is a big soft, fluffy hen to pet in the box. She talks quietly to her and tells her what a good mommy hen she is. Now I just need to get some eggs to put under her, just no time to get out and do it! Our own eggs are being sold to customers, so want to buy a small batch of Welsummer and SS eggs from Deb in Fabius to hatch out. I'd be losing money on eggs either way if the hatch fails, may as well try to get some of the breeds I want.

My BR broody is very strange, and I am her protector. She is a bit peculiar since she got broody and the others are not kind. They were squishing into her box and there was the night that four of her eggs got broken and mostly disappeared. She had a full crop in the morning, so she. May have had a hand in it somehow...it's a mystery. But I moved her to a secure box, and she stays in there with her remaining three eggs, which I candled and they are dark inside and feel heavy. She talks to the eggs. If she needs a break she comes to the door and hops from foot to foot, guess that's one of those universal signs. I let her out and guard her eggs. I've started to lock them in so none of those bad girls can get to them. She zooms around in the yard takes care of everything and heads back to her secure box. When she seems close to being ready to return I unlock it and stand sentry duty. I will have to think of where she can raise the kids, those other hens are just waiting to cause her and the babies trouble. I don't think she is confident enough to protect them.

Boy, am I glad I was born human!
