Morning all. Looks to be a beautiful day and the cheeps were already pounding on the doors when I went out to let them out this morning. Gave them some bananas and strawberry parts. I thought the terrorists were going to kill themselves trying to get out the big window while watching me put out the goods! I opened the pop door and it was a free for all. The tater tots are all roosting with the big girls now. They tolerate them as long as the youngsters remember that the girls get to eat first and get dibs on prime roosting spots inside and out of the coop. These heritage rir are almost as big as the girls at almost three months of age. I am wondering how much bigger they are going to get. No attempted crows from the boys yet. Probably a good thing.

Tab--I already have a few cast iron pans. I also gave some serious consideration as to their usage but decided to leave it be. It wont make dd pain any less. It will just take time. Its a good thing that she is moving away. New place, new job and her sister will help.

Off to the pharm today.

Once she gets in the new place and is at a new job she will get over him and find Mr. Right eventually.

My poor Blackie (australorp broody). I made her an area all to herself and thought no one else could get in. Got home from work yesterday and she was out of her area and 2 other australorps were IN her area. I had only given her 4 eggs to start. One went missing a couple weeks ago so she's been on 3 most of the time. Yesterday, 2 more were gone and a small partial egg/chick was left behind. One hen that I had just taken out was now in another regular nest and I caught her eating a fresh egg. I grabbed her and then realized she's also broody (bare chest). I tagged her with an orange ziptie. I'm assuming I have to get rid of her, right?
I sealed off Blackie's area better, so I don't think anyone can get in. Poor girl only has one egg left and I'm hoping it's a good egg. I tried to candle it while she was off it but it was too light in the coop and I couldn't see anything.

AND Blondie (BO) is broody again. She has stuck like glue to her nest, so I may make a whole other secure area for her and future broodies. More of a permanent broody area.

What's that yellow thing up in the sky??? Enjoy it while it's here.

I know I can't believe that their was sun today although I guess I should have been building an Ark instead of chicken runs cause we are looking at rain again for the next 2 days.

Had to share some pics of the baby bunnies. Two had their eyes opened today so the kids were excited. This is the one we care keeping.

This is the splash hen I got from Marquisella. She decided to go broody right next to the front door of the coop! So now everything I do with that coop-cleaning, feeding, has to go thru the nest box door!

So pretty she is.

Well loaded my bator up. Who knows whats going to hatch. I got 12 eggs from lady at work don't know what she has. And I got 23(had 24 but wife wanted to eat it) from a farm down the road. Bought a flash light to candle them at home depot today a nice defiant one highest lumes I could find besides maybe flood light style. Has 590 lumens so hope that's enough. Tried on a light brown egg and it looked like I could see slightly shaded spot for a yolk but not 100% sure. I need to get another thermo and hygrometer though the two i'm using are two different readings. Then again one is on same lvl as eggs other is in top of the incubator from factory. using the genesis 1588 bator and I got a zilla digital thermo/hygrometer. And I need to learn how to calibrate them.

I have a digital thermostat that is way off too had me insane today keep checking to make sure it was that and not a problem.

Just an FYI, if anyone is interested in a baby bunny, (they will be ready end of July/beginning of August) 3 of them will be available. They are holland lops.

Is it possible for eggs to not have air cells? I try candleing some just to see if I can see them but I don't see any shadeing difference except where I think the yoke maybe. My humidity was way high like 65's or so cause I thought the one was off but it's the one that was correct. Now I have 4 hygrometers in there and 4 thermometers. I had wife take all water out while I was at work to lower it and it droped to about 38-42 when I got home. I added some water like 4tsp repluged the vent hole and it's back up to 60%. Just took the top vent off to see where it settles at.

The air cells bug me cause i'm not sure if my light is too bright or not bright enough these are lighter brown eggs i'm using a flashlight with 590 lumes and a full toilet paper roll on top of it. paper is duct taped so no extra light comes out between the sheets. It has a high and lower setting I've tried both but don't see any difference in egg. The most I see is some pin hole bright spots. Just incase you don't know lumes (I don't) a 40 wat light bulb ranges from like 390 to 450's. I just tried a lower rated bulb I don't know the lumes but it should be like a 25 watt bulb.

I already know i'm going to screw this up big time if I haven't already. At least its only 7 dollars spent on eggs. I just don't want any to start to develop and then stop cause I screwed up. Think i'll have to make a blog "how not to incubate chicken eggs". Start with don't buy eggs your not sure if they are fertile or not lol.

I got a 120 lumen LED flashlight and do the same thing with my hand. My problem is I'm not completely sure what I'm looking at. I have compared to the link everyone posted, and the bought eggs are developing with movement. But I'm not sure on my blue egg. It almost looks like when I move the egg there is a pool of blood that moves inside. At least that was my own freebie egg. One more week!

Can't quite tell if the sun is coming or going out there today. Hope it stays. Alright so how long should I wait on these two silkie eggs in the bator before I give up on them? Today is day 22 and I've heard some taking up to day 24 to hatch, but I'm just shocked I guess after seeing what little space was left in them before lock down on Wednesday. This will be interesting to see when Stella's eggs will start now seeing as how they looked just like these two yesterday before lock down with her.

Nutty - They are strictly outdoor rabbits. They've only come inside a short while in the winter when the kids have asked to play with them. We'll bring one in a time and let it hop around the family room for a little while and then bring it back outside. In winter I just throw lots of hay in their cages for some type of insulation but nothing more than that. Oh I always keep two water bottles for each rabbit - one inside and one on their cage. So when one freezes, you can just swap it out.

Was the grass dry ? or was some of it still wet when you raked it ? it has to be completely dry all the way through ...
I had to clean my run out too the rain made the poo smell quite pungent ..Only straw & leaves in our run ..

Yes the grass was dry - it was all the mulch and mud that I had to remove that was stinky. I've tried the straw and leaves, didnt like the straw but the leaves worked well and the chickens loved scratching thru them.

When did you put the eggs in the 'bator. If it's only been a day or 2 don't worry about trying to candle them yet. Leave them to "bake" then take a look on day 10. If they're fertile you'll be pleasantly surprised to see an air cell & the little veins & the soon to be chickie moving around in there

. I guess a lot of people candle @ day 7, but I'm not that good yet. At that point you should be able to tell which ones are not fertile, they'll be perfectly clear and have no air cell. If you're not sure if they're growing or not leave them in the 'bator and re-candle at "lock-down " You'll know for sure by then. I agree, 60% is too high. I try to keep my 1588 & Brinsea between 40 -50 %.

I was going to say the same thing. LOL The earliest I candled was on day 4 and say veins. But don't make yourself crazy if you don't see anything. But yes, by Day 10 you should definitely see something growing there.

I have : Barred rocks , Blue Barred rocks, Speckled Sussex, Iowa Blue/Ameracauna X's and possibly Aracauna & BLRW. Not sure who's who yet on the last 2 breeds !!
