NY chicken lover!!!!

TOB , To examine a chicken or treat them wrap them up in a towel ..Even cover their head ..It will calm them .
slowly peel back the towel over where the eye is ..have someone else do the drops if you can
I do a tight wrap like you would do for a baby ..overlapping both sides of the towel , make sure their feet are covered ..
They can do a number with those nails ..as Breella & I have the scratches to prove it .

This is what I do with Green who I am treating for bumblefoot. I wrap her tightly making sure to get the towel snug at the top of her wings. If I dont she somehow wiggles her wings out. She stays pretty calm for a chicken who has her foot being cut.

Good luck in treating her eye

Morning All,
I was going to attempt to give the three silkie teens baths today, getting them looking nice again after all this rain we've had this summer, but then I stepped outside this morning and noticed it looks like more rain. So I'm thinking what the heck would be the point.

TOB - Good luck with your bird today. Let us know how everything turns out.

He is a big boy ...he would be 4 months ...maybe he is close to his growth . Are the rest of your chickens banties ?
My Amber link teen hens matured at 4 - 4 1/2..Are laying eggs almost every day
Hows your chicken Scratch ?

Only the Silkie, she's become good buddies with him and they are an odd couple for sure. My others are 2 White Leghorns, 2 Red Sex Links, 8 Easter Eggers, 3 Barred Rocks and another silkie but that one is a mix. The Silkie mix was also listed as a banty but he's pretty big as well, but nowhere near the giant that Duane has become. None of my girls are laying except for the pure Silkie who is much older than the kids (she's 2 years old at least). I feed Agway feeds, Started on chick grower, switched to layer because many of the girls are looking mature and may start laying soon. Duane is active, but not aggressive. He's a total ham actually. I've only ever seen him get mean with new chickens when he's showing them the pecking order, after that he's everyone's best friend. I have yet to see him mate or dance for ladies, I have never hear him crowing, or even trying to crow he makes some cute noises but nothing manly.

I have to whine about the rain too !

I am trying to get a barn up before hay ... but hay is not being cut ... and now I am not only worried about the barn, but even finding affordable hay to put inside of it.

ARGH ! and it is raining again this morning - so no mowing again today .... I think my neighbors must think I like that 80's swamp monster look .....

Quote: You need to use something specific for eyes. I always had some tubes left over from dogs or horses. Ingested antibiotics probably don't work well on eyes, I don't think it gets to it well enough. When I had cataract surgery, I had to put it directly into the eye. I wonder if it would work on chickens? I have left over, should work I would think....Pharm?

Tsc sells an ophlamic(sp) antibiotic eye ointment (for cows, I think). I have used it on roosters eyes after they have beaten each other up.

Thanks for tips on the towel-wrap, Gramma and Armor... That's a good idea, as I have been scratched and those scratches usually get red and ugly before healing.

Marq and/or anyone with eye drop experience:

With regard to the eye drops, I need good dosing instructions. I am going to head out shortly and purchase a bottle, as I have errands out towards TSC anyway. If the drops are for cows, I would worry about how to properly dose a bird. I will ask at the store, but please share your advice if you've used them. Also, I would think I should treat the other eye, just in case? Not sure about that thought...

Thx again.

Anyone have any experience with Dark Brahma/Crosses? I'm worried about Duane. He's huge. They are only at most 16 weeks old. Duane is a monster. His legs are HUGE, his body is HUGE. He's at least twice the size of even my biggest of the girls. Is it normal for a rooster to get so big so fast? He was supposed to be a Banty, and instead he's so big I'm worried that I'll have to separate him from the ladies so he doesn't hurt any of them when he matures enough and starts to get frisky.

I have had both LF and Bantam Buff Brahmas. You have a LF on your hands their and he will only get bigger. He'll be around 12 lbs. in another 8-10 months. A bantam would be just about done growing at 4 months. It would only get wider. Plus it wouls only be around 25- 30 ounces at 4 months.

But he's not suffering from some crazy gigantic disorder? I don't mind if it's normal for him to be large but I was terrified that I bought the Andre the Giant of chickens. I should probably seperate him from my bantams so he doesn't squish them shouldn't I? Unless the girls are going to catch up with him in terms of growth I don't think I have any pullets I'd feel safe letting him mount.
