NY chicken lover!!!!

I've heard lots of talk on this "canning" subject. I always wondered what people do with this stuff after canning? Does it get put in a recipe? Eaten by itself? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I've never canned anything before nor do I know anyone who does.

Well you can Can up enough stuff for the entire year or years ahead. I also give 4 zo jars to seniors at church. Jams of course are good on muffins or scones. Apple sauce makes a nice side to a good dinner. Some like it on pork but I don't.

DW was just telling me that a friend had guest for dinner but while doing up her strawberries realized there would not be enough to go over the Angel food cake. She took the jam I had given her warmed it up with the stawberries and had a nice topping for the cake.

Jams make nice fillings for cakes too. I once used my raspberry jam in a white cake pouring it in the batter and swirling it through then baking it. the kids at school loved it. Sold it all in one day.

You can do salsa. DW just used two quarts of my tomatoes for chili. Tomatoes I did last fall.

Canning is easy peasy. Join us and learn.

Oh and jams make great hostess gifts too.

Upstate New York always gives me a laugh. For those of us in Corning, upstate is Buffalo or Thousand Islands. While vacationing in Wyoming we met several people who thought because we were from NY that it meant the city. While I'm considered upstate to some, I could almost throw a stone and reach PA.

Gramma Chick - I'm so sorry about your burn. Please take care of it as it can get nasty. My (pressure) canner won't let me open it until it's cool.

Farm Sanctuary - Before I needed to volunteer at my own house I tried to volunteer there. Because I wasn't a vegetarian they wouldn't accept me.

Gramma - thank God you didn't get splattered in the face. I hope you aren't burned too badly and heal quickly. Keep us posted.

Lynzi - your little chick looks good as gold to me. Hooray!!

Chick Princess - sounds like you did a thorough job treating that bumblefoot. Poor thing - hope she gets some relief...it sounds nasty.

Oh Tab, glad you and baby to be are well, and hope your beagle finds his way home. I had a beagle who loved to go on walk abouts, it drove me crazy, then she would turn up.

Gramma, ouch. Hope you are ok. I've been making pickles and jams...today was pickles. So, Lynzi, you do know someone who cans...I've canned applesauce, it is just a water bath, last year we were given tons of apples so made applesauce.

Did anyone know that the spice Mace is the outer covering of nutmeg? That was one of the things I learned today.

An elderly friend of mine in Canada used to make the best crab apple jam...she passed away many years ago. I am so tempted to try making my own, but like Lynzi, I have no experience canning or preserving. My mother makes a sort of chutney she calls "chili" but it is not like the meat dish -- it is made of tomatoes, peaches, peppers and other fruits, veggies and pickling spices. It's a huge task, but is unique and tasty. She used to preserve our pear crop from the 2 trees in our backyard where I grew up. So she could help me....if someone has a good, old-fashioned type crab apple JELLY recipe?

Tab glad Baby is good I hope your dog finds it way back home.

Gramma Take care of those burns be careful water burns can be nasty.

Another semester of school has started which means back to work for me. I really do enjoy it just will take a couple of days for me to get a routine down seems that I am on the go continuous will be better when it gets settled down and I don't have a ton of meetings to go to also. My lavender Silkie Rooster has started crowing again he stopped for a while so am hoping that he will start fertilizing the eggs. It is hilarious to listen to all the Roosters out there competing with the crowing. Tomorrow is a free day for me so will probably spend the day cleaning chicken pens.
