NY chicken lover!!!!

So, had this baby monitor going all night. I can hear the tiny chicks peeping, I can hear the girls who are laying eggs making their cooing and listen to it escalate into egg song for the morning. They are all miserable about being locked in the coop still but I am not opening that until 8am. Duane has been silent all morning.

Breella - your baby monitor experiment is making me want to go out and get one just for the fun of it! But wow, not a peep from Duane huh? Sounds like something fishy is going on with this officer that keeps coming by. Can't wait to see how Duane is the next few nights/mornings.

It has rained so much here. In my run around the coop is a mud hole. To bad I don't have pigs. I almost took a digger last night in the storm trying to close up for the night. I think that I need to get a load of gravel to put next the coop where it is so muddy. Most of the coop has good grass, but there is the one side of the coop where it is muddy. Any Ideas on what to do to help. I put some shavings down, but I don't think that I put enough cause it all washed away in the rain. I'll get a picture in the morning of my muddy problem area. I can't afford much so I need to come up with something that is as close to free as possible. I was thinking about putting the shavings from the coop there and then just cleaning it up in the spring. I know that will be a lot of work. The only other option that we have is to move the coop to the other side of the run and that will take a small army. It weights a ton. The ducks don't seem to mind the mud, but it is getting to the point where the girls don't like to go on that side. They don't mind walking through the other muddy patch when it is free (range)time.

My mud pit. It is actually flat, but it hasn't been the same since the flooding in July that we got. When we got the flooding the water ran through our yard then through the run under the coop then out in the dog yard. I need to figure out what to do to the area to help it not stay so wet.

Some villages/towns actually give away wood chips for free. I know it's not ideal, but would work as a temp. fix if you can get them. Also 'crusher run' stone is relatively cheap and you wouldn't need a lot. Good luck with it - Sue

Good morning everyone. It's raining again. Sounds like lots of fall projects are going on. I am struggling with the disparity between the girls idea of how their yard should be, and how I imagine it. The girls think there should be random pits for bathing, and any gravel placement is temporary, as gravel is portable. I on the other hand plant shrubs that flower and give shade, hope to preserve a grassy lawn and a neat area. Of gravel surrounding the coop. The gravel is migrating down hill. They love to scratch it around....I advise against gravel.

I repaired some holes by fencing off that area and replanting the grass, and some of that has stayed, but they re-excavated some places. I guess it's just part of the chicken experience.

Is there a way for you to section it off so the chickens/ducks can't get to it for a couple of weeks? Anytime I've moved a coop it leaves a bare spot in the lawn. I have a round pen that I bought for the rabbits last summer that I use when repatching those spots by planting grass seed. I buy that Scott's EZ Seed and just sprinkle it down and it's amazing how fast it grows in and covers the spot. I have a big square blow up pool in the backyard all summer and when I took it down I sectioned off that square, sprinkled the EZ Seed over it and it grew in within 2 weeks. Although having the area in a sunny spot helps too. But I would at least try to grow some grass before anything else if you can section it off some how so the chickens cant get in there.

Morning all. Finally got electric back around 4 this morning. The storms that blew through were pretty bad.

Eowyn hatched out the other chick yesterday. She is a great mom and I believe I have one splash silkie chick and one light blue. I am thinking girls (at least hoping so).

I have to agree with everyone else about Duane and the repeated visits by said police officer. Something isnt right there.

Off to pharmland. Loving the cooler weather!
