NY chicken lover!!!!

I am really starting to love this fermented feed. There is less poop on the boards! Even if that is the only benefit I get out of spending the time it takes to prepare it the less time I spend poop scooping seems to be a heaven send. The girls really seem to look forward to it. I'm giving it twice a day. I think I'm using less feed overall but I'll have to wait longer and take a look back at my ledger in a few weeks to see low long this bag lasted versus bags before it.

I have a question for other fermenters, how well do you drain/strain the feed? So you just scoop it out with a siv and let that be it or do you prefer to let it drain to a drier consistency? Why?

At first I drained it in a colander.....then I found that if I add enough feed to it ...it will rise to the top & I can just scoop it into a bowl .
Drain it... ? to save that precious liquid.. Also it seems to be more messy the more liquid y it is .
if it is too wet you can add more dry feed ..it will adsorb the extra liquid in a bit ..stir it up ..feed them

Went out to lock everyone up tonight and found Gru on my porch. He must have been a little confused or thought there was a ghost in the coop or something. I forgot to plug in the light to their coop again after using the jigsaw this afternoon so it was dark in there. Funny, ALL the girls were in there but he was up on the lit porch. Weirdo. LOL

Drat, my flock has bugs too. Eprinex can be used for mites and lice?
Do they have Mites or Lice? If it's Lice, I would make a solution of Dawn and Water and put it in a spray bottle and spray under their wings and down their backs. They will drop off. I found that was the best thing for getting rid of lice. What is with these nasty bugs this year?!?

I cleaned my silkie coop again today, sprayed it with Neem again, but didn't get the chance to look at my lavender hen again. I will do that first thing in the morning and if she's still got them, I'll spray or dust her crest feathers again.

County Boy sold me some lovely birds today. One rooster, one hen, and one frizzle are mille fleur cochin project birds, and he also let me keep one buff barred cochin cockerel, one buff barred pullet, and one black barred split to buff pullet in exchange for picking them plus three other chicks up from featherz and running them over to him. I'm in love already :love Can't wait to get started breeding them this spring.

For those with bugs, if you don't mind going the pesticide route, you can dust your birds with Sevin and it kills them fast. I did that to get rid of the crazy lice I had a few weeks ago. You dust again ten days later for lice and seven for mites, but boy did it ever get rid of those lice. They were dead in minutes.

Sorry....TOB Had a photo of her coop and three of her
chickens in the doorway. Aria

Thank you, Aria. Those were pics from the first measurable snowfall this year, and some of my birds' puzzlement over the "white stuff!"

I just wondered ....who ? She does have a Really Nice Deluxe Coop ...Like a Chicken Mansion !

Chicken mansion! You're funny, Gramma. I cleaned out the mansion today (and it looks bigger than it is, truly)! Boy was that over due. Finally got rid of those overly dusty shavings! Happiness is a newly cleaned coop.

My hubby is working on getting an electric line up and going for me. Line was buried and we just brought it into the coop. Hopefully, I'll be powered up soon!

AQHAchick - thx for the great idea to keep waterers from freezing. That looks economical and pretty safe.
