8wks hopefully 7 is a bit much to keep inside. They should feather out nicely. If need be i can push it to 12wks but i don't believe that will be necessary. Most if not all of this hatch will go to freezer camp. This is dependent on whether i get my duckers sooner or later.

I'm trying to remember when mine feathered out completely...I'm sure the EEs will feather out faster than the silkies usually do. Then I'll just have to wait for a warmer day to place them out there. By then if it gets colder a couple of days later it shouldnt matter.

Tab, I am sorry for your loss , but find comfort in knowing she was loved while other dogs are waiting for someone like you to come along. I'm sure given a choice to do it over again she would choose you. FYI our pastor says that all dogs do go to heaven.

Snow blowed this am and am tired. Didn't think I'd make church but I did.

Do need to make another water run though. Chickens can't live without that.

Two chicks I have have reached the top of the brooder and their little heads are popping out. This means moving George and his girl to some where else.

We are out of eggs at the moment since customers come first. I have one friend who can't eat store bought so I gave them the last 15 eggs. Isn't it nice that antibiotics may be gone from commercial foods?

Yeah EE's should feather out fast, I just wait till 8wks of age in colder weather to let outside. I let my last chicks out and then a nasty storm hit a few days later lol. They did great there 6 of them so they just used each other for heat.

A friend wants $30 for cream legbar pullet she is breeding because they are rare but is only selling the pet quality ones not good breeders. Honestly though that might work for some but i can hatch my own for a little more money. And since they are auto sexing i can easily pick and choose who i want to keep and eat the rest.

I broke down and got a heated dog water bowl i put it in the run, so far so good.

The chicks are doing good almost 2wks old and trying to fly. Looking very healthy.

Did anybody else get tons of snow last night? The chickens are throwing a fit and didn't even come out of the coop today, sigh. I'll have to shovel out their run tomorrow morning before work so they don't totally poop up the coop and the nesting boxes.

I throw out some BOSS and cracked corn, lures them out each time.

Now I had considered Legbars but figured they lay a blue egg just like my Amers so it doesn't matter. The only difference is if you intend to deal the male chicks right off.

As far as I know they're not show birds. I'm not sure what the American standard is.

I have my own standard. Lay lots off egg and get big and meaty.

They entire reason for the "Bar" development was for hatcheries to sex chicks without have to pay someone to look in their butts. However the "Bar" crossing just never took off.

There were more "bars" developed than just Creams.

Of course I work toward improving my birds, but EE's are all I need to get blue, blue green, and olive eggs.

If I had a bunch of sex link chicks, what could I do with the males right off? I couldn't cut their little heads off like some can do. I'd still have to feed them and grow them out if I ate them.

Right now Creams are rare, but in the future like the lavenders there will be plenty to go around. Then some new breed will take their place in being rare. Quite frankly I can't afford them. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Didn't get lots of snow, but those without runs still walk in the snow paths and lay better than others. 5 hens, three marans and two EE's and I got four eggs. AND they're in a hoop coop that isn't completely covered on the front. It was freezing last night and they laid better than any of the others!

I'm considering getting rid of the orps. Not one egg in months! I don't know what is wrong with that coop. Even the RIR hasn't laid and egg.

If my Orps lay as poorly next year as they did this year, they will be going and I will be starting over the following spring. I'd love to get down to just a pair of Orps and bring in a couple of other breeds.

My yard has been calf to knee+ high past week or so. I had food and water out of coop and they wouldn't go out too much snow and wind for them. I had to move it back in the coop they sit there all day. I shoveled the snow around coop first few days but with our wind on this hill it fills in too fast and was covering food too fast. I need to fix my snow blower this week and build I guess a little 3 walled box to put the food in and keep snow out.
