NY chicken lover!!!!

Alright so I came across this blog today of someone who built a hoop coop and the more I looked I at it and read about it I really liked it. So I began researching on how to build one of these contraptions and quickly became really frustrated. I read multiple times that these coops were "easy" to build and could be built for much less of a cost. I'm sorry but the cattle panels alone are $54 at TS. If I use three of those that's more than $150 right there. Now you're talking wood, screws, door/lock hardware, chicken wire or hardware mesh....I might as well pay someone to make me something the size I need! Sheesh! I was actually thinking of transforming two of the TS rabbit hutches/chicken coops into a large coop for the three orps. Still thinking about doing it but I'm wondering if it'd just be easier to waste more money on a small coop for them. Something similar to what they were in originally that the ducks are in now. I can see myself wasting all sorts of money on revamping this thing and then not being happy with it. So I might as well just buy another online coop.

That is nowhere NEAR what I paid for my cattle panels. In fact, just looking at the website I see they are still available for $21. I think you're looking at the wrong ones. My 3 hoop coop (link to which is on my profile) cost me no more than $200.

Edit: Here's the link. $21.99.

Yea it looks like I was looking at the wrong ones. I just don't have the supplies needed to build one of those. I'd have to also purchase the right saws and what not to build the bottom frame and whatever else needed to be cut. The coop I have for the ducks is on sale for $238 I'm just going to buy another one of those. I really like it.

I only paid $20 a panel. The saw you need doesn't have to special. Even a hand saw would work. Or you could do like I did and just make it as big as the 2x4s are long :) I am all about simple!! I really didn't use a saw much.

Pharmchick- I was thinking the same thing about Rancher losing his tinfoil hat :D

Holy crap! I didn't think I'd ever see the day you got silkies. You'll love em, no really you will. We have a small flock of BBS and they're actually decent layers when they aren't broody.

I didn't say I was keeping them. I did have them once but sold them. Of the eggs I brought back three turned out to be silkies. Claudia had a really nice splash.

I almost fell off my seat at lunch when I read this LOL

I've been trying to figure out my peeps living situation as well. I'm thinking about moving the Duck Hut to the other side of the run, but then again I have been thinking about building a hoop coop for them...Then I'm trying to figure out a plan on how to build a small coop for some silkies and frizzles that will not cost that much. If my math is close I have a plan to build a small coop with a detachable run for around $60.

Cattle panels at TSC two, 16 X 50" $21 each. Hardware cloths, $65, 2X4 for floor, 12 $24- $30, blocks for support 6 - 8 $12-16. 2X3's for frame and door. maybe 8-10 $16-20. 2 10' 2X4 pressure treated are cheaper $4. Plywood for floor 2 sheets $40 maybe less. $196 give or take. Oh three cheap 6X8 blue tarps at $1-2 ea at Value home center and one 18X 16 at Ollies $22. = $245 give or take. I used culled lumber from HD so it was a bit cheaper. You could of course use recycled pallet lumber as well.

Not including nails or staples. I bought two sheets of T-11 siding for the back part but didn't cover the door. It's hardware cloth and covered with feed bags part way up.

I am aware it may not work in some areas but for me it works just fine. a 9X8 floor space and a roost on one side holds 12 large birds just fine. It also had a run of two panels but they are covered with chicken wire to the ground. Coop is closed at night so they're fine. This one is in the open but in a shaded area the tarps will last longer or you could buy a heavier one. You could also do a dirt floor and save that way. I chose not to for the coop.
