NY chicken lover!!!!

I have one of those little 4 shelf greenhouses, itching to pull it out again. Hubby and I were discussing getting grow lights, since we start our own seeds. But reaching to the window for light makes them too leggy and they usually break in the wind as soon as transplanted. Got plenty of leftover seeds, so going to put the seed money to growing supplies instead. Anyone have recommendations? We do have some fluorescent light fixtures in the garage that will be replaced, can we use those with the HO T5 or T8 bulbs? I seen CM has grow lights on sale, with a 20% sale next Friday, but want to keep costs down.
That is what i use. I haven't had a problem with them being to stemy but then again I don't usually start them till the end of March early April. I want to start them extra early to see if I can get them nice come spring. Last year as soon as they started to sprout out about an inch I rotated them. I usually did it every other day. I rotated them every which way that I could. I turn them around, move them to different levels. This year I think that I'm going to try to put a fan on them to help them get stronger. I don't mind trying new things with the seeds. They are cheaper then the already grown plants.

Alright the decision has made to place an order for ducklings in the next couple of weeks. Feb 14th the earliest to be exact. Myself and two others are going in on an order and before placing it I'm wondering if anyone else here would be interested in going in on our order to help save on shipping/small order costs. If you are interested please PM me. Thanks!!!

Forgot to mention the order will be placed thru eFowl.com
Just got home real tired. give me a couple of days? maybe?

Saw a Hawk the am and had to leave the birds inside while I was at school . Also saw a squirrel in a tree near the house too. Checked before I left and the hawk and the squirrel were gone.

I let the birds out when I got home I hope they'll be okay. Two half hoops don't have runs, but will if I can get to it this year.

I need a nap.

Afternoon all. Nice quiet day at work today (thank goodness) and the sun is shining and the roads are melting. I'll take it. Ordered my eggs from Fred and cant wait till I get them. Hatching fever is coming on. Must stay strong. Fixing the cheeps a nice dinner here in a bit. The nice part about cooking squash is that the rinds make great chicken bowls and the chickens eat those too so no cleanup is necessary! Finally figured out that the one med I am taking is what is causing me all kinds of problems. Sometimes the cure is worse that the disease so I wont be taking that one any more. The side effects are killer.

I would love to try to grow plants from seeds but everyone who knows me will tell you that I am an epic failure when it comes to plants. I killed a cactus once. I have some bamboo that I was given for christmas that is still alive. I dont know how. I do want to put in a garden by the coop this year and try that. I figure that if I fail at that, the chickens can at least eat my failure. Im going to give it a go though. It will give my kids something to bust my chops about.

Time to serve the cheeps dinner. Later...

Fred who and what kind of eggs. I'll be ordering my Columbian rock eggs soon. My hens are laying. Gotta get another roo.

Gotta hatch soon and get it over with. I've three chicks coming up plus the two roos from before. The two chicks from eggs bought I don't think I'll keep. Not sure whether boy or girls but it don't matter.

Freds Hens is his handle. He has heritage breed rir. His line is the Wilfred Kittle line. He sent me pics of his birds and they are just gorgeous. I am not into showing but these birds could be shown, they are just that good. Anyways, I have been talking to Fred and getting pointers and picking his brain about breeding. I guess my heritage rir arent quite as heritage as they should be. When I saw his pics, I knew right away. He was kind but pointed out their flaws. Not that I dont love them anyways. I just wont be breeding them. Besides, Thelma and Louise keep me company while Im out and about so thats good enough for me. The hatching eggs I am getting should, if all goes well, give me a breeding trio to work with. I will be hatching out mutt eggs as well because I have an order for some chicks. My silkies have stopped laying again and Eowyn is sitting on air. She is a determined broody when she wants to be. I will be hatching out silkies in the spring. Actually, the girls will be hatching out their eggs in the spring! Less work for me! Oh---everyone enjoyed their dinner. Didnt really have to wash the bowls when I came in but I did it for sanitary reasons. Dh objects to eating out of the same bowl that the chickens just ate out of.

How do I know if a chick is blind? Backasswards's eyes looks wrong to me. Tomorrow I'll try to get some good photos in natural light of this chick but the eyes are solid black, which could be genetic. One of the EE's whom I hatched from has solid black Silkie like eyes and that could be the hen. However the eyes still just look-- wrong in some way.

This chick has had it hard, after the initial help I gave the chick I came home to find it with just a foot kicking out to the world and the membrane had dried and gotten stuck to the chick and the carton, it was terrible. Thus began a slow process of helping and waiting.

Took it to the sink, ran warm water and wrapped it in a paper towel. Did my best to rehydrate the membrane and get the chick out of it. Took my time, went very slow. I didn't read any of the help pages before hand, it just seemed like the right thing to do.

After some slow work and lots of running warm water to keep the chick moist and not cold I realized this poor chick has a malformed head, probably due to the growth during the malposition (the head seems better today). The yolk was not fully absorbed, after reading this can also be due to the malposition so I added a lot of water to the incubator, added the wet paper towels to a tupperware and set the chick inside. The feet unfurled on their own, the yolk was absorbed and Backasswards is now in the brooder with the other chicks. Final count, six chicks hatched.
