NY chicken lover!!!!

LOL! You let her get dish towels in exchange for your getting ducks??? Too Funny!!! So what is her response to actually seeing the ducks???

Well I'm not to sure, but she did take out her cook books. She hasn't seen them yet. She's not an animal person. We're opposites that way. It's a miracle we've been married so long. It has to be love, nothing else can explain it.

Well I did it I wasn't wanting to but I did. I bought animals from TSC. I was weak and I bought some KC's. I was going to order eggs and hatch out at easter time because I wanted runners but I decided I wanted some now not later. So we now have 7 ducklings in the house and man they are so much softer than chicks. I'm going to have to make a pool for they're brooder though.
Well off to get them set up I just cleaned out a brooder and was letting it air dry some.
JLAW has ducks!!! Another one who couldn't resist!

Have you no self control? Well like I said Storey's says the lay 340 so lets hope they do for you.

Storey's says : " Mrs. Adele Campbell of England in the 1800's, developed them. They are a cross of a British Fawn and white, runner hen. She bred it first ot a Rouen to increase size. Later she used a Mallard drake to increase hardiness and foraging ability.

Adele succeeded in increasing the size for carcass production while maintaining reasonably good laying ability. Later breeders worked on increasing egg production and by the 1920's the Campbell became recognized as the most abundant layer in duckdom, pumping out as many as 340 medium size eggs per year. "

Now seriously here: I have to be careful to NOT become a "collector". You know one of those people who collects cats and dogs. I try to remember them so I don't become a chicken collector.

I worry about that some nights. I've got more eggs than I can sell now. Plus chickens too.

Sonew - has those auto sex birds and I'd like to get some. I do think I can cull the roo chicks on hatching.

I will be parting with the orignal BM hens once I get a few more replacements. The same with the Delawares.

I plan to rearrange the coops. So if I get that done and can keep 12 hens per breed plus two roos with each, I might be able to keep things at 50.

That would be BM's, Dels, CR's, BR's and EE's. 12 hens times 5 = 50 right? Roosters don't count. Right? I'm going to need to take a sleeping pill tonight.

I need an intervention. Do they have AA type meetings for us?

If they are supposed to lay 340 a year mine are already down by 60 days. LOL Still no eggs yet this year. I'm hoping soon though.

I was cleaning up the brooder this afternoon. The ducks sure do make a mess and your right Rancher they do drink a lot...Well anyway DH just had came in from working on the truck and he said...."I hate to admit it, but I think that the little yellow one is cute"..That is my little pekin... Glad that DH is warming up to them. Later in the afternoon he came back from running to the store and he asked me why I let some chickens out? Went out and there were 4 chickens out. We are not sure how they got out of their run. One of my reds was sitting on the fence when I came out so I'm guessing that they flew over, or they may have jumped over where the snow is high. Either way looks like I'll be extending it all the way around. Right now it is just extended by the dog yard.

A lot has happened to all the breeds since they were first developed. This is why you'll want to keep track of who is laying how many. Pull the stragglers and keep only the good layers.

The book says there are a few other colors but I've never seen them. It also says White and Dark varieties are commercially available in N. America but if there are white ones out there I've not seen any. I have seen light and dark chicks offered at TSC.

Like the Swedish drakes have dark heads and hens do not. This is why I think this extra duckling is a drake. I suspect I have three and two. Two being hens. I hope I'm wrong.

I haven't found out how many the Swedish lay.

Gotta run Bones is on. ta ta,

I wouldn't give them anything to swim in for a while. They can get very cold when wet. Ducklings are not waterproof ....I almost killed one of mine letting it "swim" before it had feathers. And an oil gland. I know, ducks in the wild swim at birth, however they have the oil from their mother's gland. She kinda grooms them. They say that ducklings not with their momma develop their oil gland about 6 weeks of age.
