NY chicken lover!!!!

YOU were the person I wanted to come to my house when the water was flowing across the yard. It was a WONDERFUL lesson in fluid dynamics, earth science and just plain fun. Darn, I wish I had remembered who was home schooling when it was happening. I had a great time changing the flow of water, making places lower so the water WOULD flow and watching the ice dams build up, only to crush them before they caused the water to overflow and cause a flood. The whole time I was thinking, "who do I know that home schools...this would be a great science lesson". Darn. Too late now, but if it happens next year I will try and remember who home schools and contact you. It was a micro-river enviroment....something the kids could see years of how rivers flow and change and change the landscape in just a short afternoon. (And hands on...who can't get behind hand-on learning when homeschooling? I know my kids loved hands on learning as opposed to book learning)

Well I sure have water running here. Even when I try to fill in the area you can see it make it's way through.

Too many other posts I just can't catch up.
Gave away four hens today. Older girls but glad to be down some. Monday hope to sell three good layers. I hate to say it but I become attached and don't want to part with them. If I don't get rid of some I'll have no room for the new girls.

I've still got 13 chicks coming up. I don't want to part with any til I see how they turn out. I may hatch some more Marans but don't want to wait to long to do so. The duckses are getting big. They sure do eat a lot. Will move them to a bigger brooder before I leave. They should be okay til I get back. Messy, messy, messy!

Also when I get back will be expecting some Columbian Rock eggs and perhaps some Del chicks from MO. These will determine more of who stays and who goes. Spring should be in full swing here by then I hope. Then it will be busy, busy, busy.

Sorry to hear about the TSC chick thing going on. Haven't been there in awhile, but at last visit there were just a few chicks. Hopefully the end of the season for them.

Any advice on how to choose who to keep and who to part with will be appreciated.

Lol that would be cool. I have had a flood similar to that a while ago. It was before I was homeschooling but my house was flooding and I was in panic mode. I came home to firemen in my house lol. My basement flooded almost to my panel. The neighbors across the street built a new house on the hill and drained the whole hill to the runoff that came out directly across the street from my front door. We have a small koi pond and i had fish in my yard. They have since fixed the problem. But for hurricane Irene we build sand bag wooden barriers around our house for water flow but it didn't flood lol...

Baking bad news on the babies. Four of the seven died. All the LF chicks did fine, it was just the bantams. Both possible porcelains died, the chipmunk you picked out, and one of the ones I picked out. They gave me six replacements for free and there were only seven left so I bought the little leftover, but that one didn't look too good so we'll see. I tagged two of the new feathery legged ones with blukote and those are now yours. I'll post pictures. Bummed out about the first four though :(

Did you decide to set the duck egg?

Well that stink, bad luck with tractor supply this year :(

I decided to wait the rat thing chewed a giant hole in my other incu, but when they start laying more consistently I would take 10-12 and then a week later set some chicken eggs to have them all hatch out at the same time, we will have quail on Easter though

Evening all. So far 11 chicks have hatched and more are still pipping! Good news!.. Hopefully more will hatch overnight. Already planning to set another hatch when this one is done. Babies are down in the brooder enjoying the warm light. Dh is watching them like tv. Silkies were out rummaging this morning and the terrorists were out later. Supposed to get cold again.

Rancher--its always hard to decide who stays and who goes. I wish you luck with that.

Good hatch! Congrats :)

Ventured over to Ithaca this morning, decided to stop in to see what the farmers market had. They are a little 'different' over there, some to the extreme modern day hippies. Well a few vendors had eggs for sale, cheapest I saw was $3.75 a dozen, another for $4.25, and the rest for $5 a dozen! Meanwhile I have 7 dozen taking over my fridge. Egg salad for lunch this week will use up 1 doz, hubby will take 2-3 doz to work for sales, need to find another customer. Anyone want to buy some eggs? :D

No, thanks, I've got 5 dozen in my fridge. I need to get on the phone and set up sales. Trouble is my customers are in the city, so have to meet up with them, it's a lot of work for $3.00.

Same here....way to many eggs, too few customers. I wonder if putting up my "Eggs For Sale" might increase my sales? But, to be honest, most of my past customers were men. Now I have nothing against men, but I don't really like having men just showing up at my door asking for eggs. I live in the country and can't even see my nearest neighbor's house (can see the chicken coop tho.LOL) I will have to remember to take eggs to my Mom to take to 'work' with her on Tuesday.

I get $2.50 for mine and some people think that is high. I say "$#&^* them, feed is getting higher almost monthly"
