NY chicken lover!!!!

So I was just checking on my chicks and a few of them were burying themselves in the pine chips with just their heads sticking out. What does this mean? They are only 2 weeks old

It means they found something fun to do with pine chips. And that you should check the temp in the brooder and make sure it is 90 degrees in some part of it so they can warm up if they are cold.

Thanks... the temp is good so i guess they are just playing around then.

Lord have mercy!

I have a frizzle chick right now if your coming this way before next week let me know.
When next week? I've only been east as far as Syracuse 3x in my life. lol Actually, my dil and grandson are flying south and I'll have the twins. I don't think I'm up to a 4+ hour trip with two 3yr olds. Depending when I might be able to make it work. I'd love to have it.

Most on our NY thread seem to be to the east or north of me. Is Fayette near you? It took me well over an hour to get there. I have been looking for buffs for nearly 2 yr but don't find them near me. I have 1 hen so even if I could find a roo, I'd be happy. The people at the very end of my road have very washed out buffs for eating. Their flock keeps getting smaller and smaller. They do the same with ducks.

I think it's about a half hour from me. I'm ok with buying hatchery eggs for this year, but would prefer local to avoid all of the shipping hazards, kwim.

Barred Rocks.

Do you have other breeds?

I can't remember who all offered me what now, lol! Somebody gave me a number for a non BYCer who had buffs and I think SS, there was somebody else in Syracuse with Australorps. But the non BYCer never called me back and Syracuse is a far trip for just the Australorps.

Anyways, we are in Pittsburgh until late Wed for my husband's sialendoscopy and I probably won't be back on BYC until we get back. I pledge to bring warm weather with me when we return!

ETA: I forgot to add that we are in Penn Yan, about 30 min south of Geneva. Both Rochester and Syracuse are a bit of a hike, but if I can get two of the breeds in one trip, it would be worth it!

Well, I annoyed some of my hens tonight by spraying bluklote on their vents. I'm going to hatch chicks for a nice man who has bought from me in the past and he wanted chicks out of specific birds so now the hens are marked. I'm wondering how often I'm going to need to reapply it before it rubs off. I'm hoping to gather enough to set them for Easter. I also blukoted one of the cochin hens so I can solve the mystery of who's laying once and for all. Not that it really matters; either way I'm setting eggs. I'll either get birds for my mille fleur project or I'll get sex links. Can't lose :D

Morning!
It seems as though the deer population around here has increased by the hundreds! I had to stop 8, (yes 8!) times this morning for deer crossing the street while I was bringing my son to school. There has to be over a 2 dozen in each field I pass. Insane! And then come around 2:30-3pm, when I go to pick up, there are even MORE! At least by that time they are just hanging out in the fields, grazing. But man, I don't think I've ever seen so many together at one time in my life. Can you hunt now or did that season end a while ago? Or maybe it's opening up soon?

Kinda bummed about only 3 eggs developing in the bator. I wish there was a way you could add more in the middle of a hatch. if it weren't for the whole lockdown thing I would. Owell, I hope all 3 develop at least.

Caught Gru in the act of mating with Nervous Nancy yesterday. So her eggs should be fertile once she begins to lay. The ones I've been getting from the Orp coop so far have been Stella's not hers like I thought. I would like to try hatching a few of her eggs just to see if I get any more splash Orps. That would be cool. Loooove the Splash!
