NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi if the orp is just starting to lay her eggs they will get bigger as she gets older. I've seen it in my hens. Mind you not a large amount bigger but they go from pullet size to large or xlarge in size
That's what I'm thinking...at least for now it'll be easy to tell which egg belongs to which hen.

I managed to get the duck hut cleaned some what today. I took all out that was defrosted on the top. DS decided that I needed to get his cold so cleaning the hut took twice as long as normal with having to stop all the time to blow my nose, coughing and then catching my breath.

We got some more of the ice shipped away so hopefully it will help with our flooding issues. We are supposed to get some snow tonight. I hate to say it but right now I think that I would rather get 2 inches of snow rather then rain! My run is a giant mud hole. It is never going to dry out.

I moved the baby duck back out for the day. Today was the first time that they got to see the big girls. A few of them came up to the side and looked in. The ducks freaked out and wan around. As soon as the realized that they weren't going to kill them, the little girls became very interested in the hens. It was so cute.

The runners are a little on the flighty side. When we have them on the floor playing they will come up to you and crawl on your lap, but forget it if you try to pick them up. The Pekin on the other hand will look up at you from the pen and almost acts like she is yelling at you to pick her up. I pick her up and she snuggles into my arm. I have to figure out a good name for her. The kids want me to give her a name based on the same cartoon that they other ducks are named after. There aren't that many characters left so I'm not sure what I'm going to name her. Right now I just call her Pudgy Pekin cause she is always the first to the food the bowl when I fill it up. I think she eats 3x as much as the runners do. They are still on the little size, but compared to a Pekin I'm guessing that they should be.

Perhaps you can take a wlk and clear any areas foxes might build a den. I've plans to build some half scare crows, like I saw in a magazine. I've seen them made with boot feet. I hope to put them in the woods and then use them as "marking" spots.

I wish I could but the neighbors might shoot me if I did that. lol.

Not to be so dense but how are these standing up by themselves? Very clever.

I always got catalogs from Millers and hadn't this year but I did get 2 from Stark. I hope they live up to the name.
I hope so too!

I ordered from Stark Brothers last year (apples and peaches) and though they are sending me new peaches this year I have no complaints about what they sent last year. My apple trees all did great but my peaches were so so and they do have a guarantee so I took advantage of it. I still have no clue if the peaches lived thru the winter or not but they weren't looking good last fall when I called them up to get my replacements.
Good to know!

9/9 eggs today! Wahoo!

Came home and started chicken chores, cuz I do them first before I sit down...might never get up again, ya know. I walk in the coop and look under the nest boxes for eggs (cuz why lay them IN the box when UNDER them is more private. LOL) And there are EYES stareing back at me. OMG. A racoon is curled up trying to stay dry IN the chicken coop. I may have solved the "where are the eggs" mystery. He was actually curled up around an egg.

I know, I know....he won't be able to do that again, cuz he would do it again. (Had to wait for Ray to get home tho, cuz I don't know where he keeps the guns. I guess I should ask that very valuable question)

Wow ! were you lucky ! you got a coon that likes eggs not chicken .
Where your chickens showing any signs that they knew the Raccoon was in there ?

My last tom, my big, gorgeous pride and joy, died today. I'm heartbroken. All three of my beautiful boys are gone.

I was giving him metronidazole on top of the amprolium and, now, Sulmet for coccidiosis on the off-chance that it was actually blackhead, although blackhead is incredibly unlikely, and the victims were lacking some of its symptoms (it's much more common down South during hot, humid weather, as the parasite doesn't do frigid weather) . Obviously, it didn't help. I have more metronidazole coming from Drs. Foster and Smith, and I think I'll dose the girls with it, just in case.

I have eight hens left. I hope they don't succumb to whatever hellish mess this is. At least it's a species-specific mess - my chooks and duckehs are unaffected.

This sucks. We also lost our remaining hive of bees to the cold (they lost too many workers and froze). I hate this miserable, interminable, nonstop winter. UGH.

So Sorry you lost the boys ...lets hope you can halt the scourge . Do turkey lay eggs as often as chickens ?
You might have some fertile eggs from the boys still ?

TOB - So Sorry.. you lost your hen ..
it is hard to tell with chickens ...if they are sick .
I lost a Roo yesterday ..he was having trouble breathing ..no other symptoms .
He was at that 8- 9 month old age when the chickens die from birth defects.

Good Morning!

Yesterday I went out to give my upper coop some apple peelings. Found my young rooster going after my buff brahma bantam rooster. They were both bloodied up but the younger was on top of the buff. My poor buff was weezy sounding. The younger in now in isolation. He would be dinner but I just don't want to kill birds myself. I cut up and cook them just fine, but me killing nope.

Almost a foot here, just finished shoveling a path for the hens so they can make it to their old run. They were voicing their displeasure over the snow covering their favorite digging spots in the garden.
