NY chicken lover!!!!

pharmmom, We have a Tiny Brinsea that holds 7 eggs. We are doing what Lindsay
advised and cracking....AND THERE WERE NO FERTILE ONES. We do have a camera and we do see Rooster Carlos with the hens.

We have 7 eggs in a carton in our laundry room and will wait 5 days and candle them.
If we do not see "something" bullseye or veins we will NOT put them in incubator and
start collecting more eggs and go through the same process.

I have two roos and one hen ! ha .... but Bakin has dibs on the extra roo ....

I am putting them together now in a small breeding pen - if you are interested in any new blood - let me know and I can post pics of the parents for you. Again - these are just for me - but gosh are they CUTE .....

OH - and I may actually brings eggs to the fair - they don't have to be "breed" eggs - but consistent in size and color for some categories ... so I actually may do that for the fun of it.

I'm not interested in any more right now. I was just wondering. I just have my one. She was an impulse buy when we got our first 6 from TSC last year. She made #7.She was one of their assorted bantams. They told me that she was a silkie.

She looked like a little penguin when we first got her. I would love you see a pic of them.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying and you have those seven eggs in your incubator, leaving them in the laundry room won't help. They won't get veins just sitting out like that and if they had a bullseye they'd have it now and you wouldn't be able to see it by candling, you'd have to crack the egg open to look for it.

Its like an honor system. For showing, they don't ask. But when people contact me about eggs, its the first thing they ask me about. Without the dark egg color, its just another chicken.

There eggs were from my first birchen hen. They are between a 5 & 6. You can see the 4 color, although its fuzzy. I have egg shade cards if anyone wants to buy one. They are $3 & go to the club.

This may be true but what are they "without the egg?" I'm of the opinion that many show people are ruining the utility purpose of the breeds. They work for type but can't get a fertile egg.

I had a SLW from a show line but the person who traded me for the girls kept telling me the rooster wasn't good at fertility. But then I'm not sure I believe them since they never really gave me anything and were selfish about their birds. I think these were the only two chickens I ever got from them.

Anyhow hens that lay few eggs of the 8 and 9 color are not much use.

You won't be able to candle and see veins until you begin the incubation process. Again, you cannot see a bullseye thru candling. You can only see it by cracking open the egg and seeing a mark like this one.

I only recommend doing this before setting any so that your not throwing infertile eggs into the incu over and over.

Once these eggs sit in the carton for over 10 days, they probably won't hatch. I'm not sure what you're trying to gain by letting them sit in the carton for 5 days and then candling? What are you candling? The only time you candle is AFTER they have been in the incubator for a couple of days.

Okay, so let me try to explain better. Letting them sit out will not help you any. Eggs don't start developing until they are in the incubator, so you will not see any veining. You also cannot see a bullseye by candling, only by cracking open an egg. Of course, if you do that that egg won't be used for hatching. If you're going to let them sit anyway you may as well put the in the incubator. Then if you candle after five days you may see veins and that will let you know the egg is developing.

Only 3 varieties are accepted by the APA, Black Copper, Wheaten and White. I'm working on the Birchen,buts it hard to get the silver to come out. I have a lot of birchen chicks hatched, no one showing silver hackles yet...fingers crossed though that they start to come out. And don't forget, if they don't lay a #4 on the Marans egg chart, they aren't a Marans...egg color is important.

I did not know that. Is this something the judges look for? Do you show and do you have to prove she lays a #4 or better? I have just a few chicks right now, but hope to hatch more later this year and cull as many as don't show silver. So far I only have one hen, but I shall try for more. It does take some time for markings to show on the hens. The roosters pretty quite. They are a fast maturing line. I also choose for utility rather than show. There has to be a happy medium.

My Sophie's eggs are btw a 4 & 5 according to your chart. I'm curious how your BCMs lay? She laid a few in the fall stopped then a few about 6 weeks ago and stopped again. Everyone else is laying but her.
