Hi folks,
I'm home and glad to be. I'm sorry to skip so many posts but I'm a bit stunned.

It seems that while I was away DW had some test done. I didn't know til I got home today. She didn't tell me. The short version is they found breast cancer. We go tomorrow to talk to the surgeon. Please keep her in prayer.

I do hope everyone else is doing fine.

Morning all! Woke up to 20 hatched babies so far with a bunch more zipping and pipping. I think I may have finally figured out how to hatch! Of the 15 shipped eggs (heritage rir) 13 made it to lockdown and 12 are out. I am a hatching machine!!! lol Brats downstairs are sure what to make of the newbies in the box down there. They had a major freak session as I cleaned out their brooder and freshened it up. Little stinkers require more care now that they are bigger. I am going to be a busy chicken momma, thats for sure. Silkies lock down next weekend. Cold out this morning. Day off means errands and housework and staining and painting. Later all.

sorry I didn't see this till this morning ..haha ..this thread grows really fast ....thanks for asking ..I am fine ..just a little sore in the hips ..lol..but that could just be the weather ..you no this getting old reminds us of all the fun we had as kids ..I would rather it remind me with a few days of feeling no pain ..if I woke up one morning and didn't feel any pain , I'd think I was dead..lol

Definately depends on the hen.  Most of mine that have gone broody have done so on nothing.  One stupid silkie tried to hatch a GOLF BALL.  (I took it away after 5 days and gave her 4 eggs) 
I know that ducks will keep laying daily until they have a clutch and then sit on them consistantly through hatching, but it  hasn't been my experience that hens do the same.  Seems hens lay an egg, decide to sit on it and invite their coop mates to lay eggs in their nest.   It's a waste of eggs if you don't mark the first ones you want hatched and remove the new eggs daily.   I swear that when Momma is broody the other hens cross their legs until she jumps off to eat and poop and gulp down water then they all pile in the nest and lay their eggs there for her to hatch.  (Of course I remove them, but they don't know that)  Once I gave her 6 eggs and the next afternoon there were 14 eggs in there.   I DON"T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH HENS for that to happen.   I think someone hid an egg the day before and put it in her nest with the rest of them.  The instinct to reproduce is very strong.

I had the same thing happen with a buff orp the year before last, she in all was broody for about 2 1/2 months (1 was on golf balls) before she hatched babies, I finally gave in, then she raised them for about 8 weeks and tried to sit again

I never thought it would be so hard to find a rooster. Been looking for a barred Rock for a month now and can't find one. I understand the d'uccle and possibly Muscovy being hard to find but really a barred Rock is so common. Then there's the fact that I'm willing to pay for them. You would think someone would jump

Unfortunately most don't keep roosters. I've learned my lesson to keep two if I intend to hatch chicks. My only BR died last fall. I have five hens but don't want to pay for hatching eggs from a breeder at this time.

If you do, you can chick out the Plymouth rock thread for, Dick Hortsman. I believe he sells eggs. If you do let me know I'd still be interested in a new rooster or giving up these five girls.
