NY chicken lover!!!!

I have not candled the eggs yet. Day 10 is Sunday the 4th.  I usually wait til then to candle. Unless I have a lot then I candle a few each day. 

One broody is Frenchy and I'm worried since she is old to stress her out by making her sit for a longer time.  The other is a Marans and I think she can handle 6-8 eggs. IF she stays sitting once I move her. I have to since other hens are adding to her load. 

I would candle right before you get these before you make a decision that maybe you didn't have to. I don't know what kinds of eggs these are you have in the incu and under the broodies but I just candled my Silkie eggs on day 4 and my Orp eggs today and could tell very easily that they were developing. Reason being because if they were clear I would have removed them and/or added more from the other Silkie. She's small so I didn't want to add too many. It's amazing this little thing is sitting on 7 Silkie eggs and 3 Orp eggs!

Hi all think I've got most postings.


Now  a request for advice.  

I have my incu up and running with very important eggs (puchased eggs) but I am expecting some more important eggs next week. (it was strike while opportunity knocked)  

So what can I do?  Some thoughts are:  1. to switch out my broody's eggs for some of these new (24) eggs.  I have two broodies at this time.  Or B.  put them in the incu with these other eggs and pull the first chicks as they (if they) hatch.  or III. see if I can't find someone who will take some and see if they can hatch them for me.  or D. put some under the broodies AND put some in the incubator And give some to someone to hatch for me. 

If I put some in the incu I will have to pull all or some of the non shipped eggs and toss them. These are Marans,  Dels and EE's  The current and expected eggs would be about two weeks apart.  I do have a friend who has an old 1600 still air but I've never used a hatcher set up. THESE EGGS ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND I DON'T EXPECT TO GET THEM AGAIN. 

I don't have a second incubator. Yet!  

I would agree with Lynzi. That or go buy another incu! Tsc had them on sale last week too :/

I don't have money for a new incu. Also keep in mind that every incubator requires a learning period to tweak it to your skills. TSC has still airs and they aren't as easy to use as one would think. Even the top of the line take time to learn. Keep this in mind when buying one.

Sorry about your duck. You can stop chickens from flying by trimming the long feathers on just one wing. That makes them lopsided so they can't get far. Don't know if it works on ducks, but worth a try I'd say. Most duck breeders pinion the ducks at hatch. I don't know how to do it, but I'm sure if you google it, its out there somewhere. I'm surprised KC ducks can fly, I thought they were a heavier breed...

When I got my first batch of muscovy ducklings two of them were pinioned (just one wing). The drake is too heavy to fly anyway, but the hen's sisters all fly very well. Brownie does not ever fly because she is so lopsided. I think if you cut back the feathers on just one wing that will solve the flying problem until they molt. And, yes, ducks molt and look just as sad and raggedy as chickens

We butchered 6 chickens and they are in the freezer. Within days we had a chicken develop a yeast infection .. Do you guys think the chickens in the freezer are ok to eat? I didn't check anyone for symptoms of anything before we sent them in...

Hi Lynzii, so sorry to hear about you duck. It's hard to believe that someone could hit him and not stop.

Rancher I hope you get a 100% hatch!

Today we tried an experiment, my boy wanted to play with the birds so he took the 2 hen (?) chickens away from the roo to see what the roo would do.

We tease that poor bird! All he did was make clucking noises. My son then chased the frizzle around the kitchen for a while, these birds move very slow, trying to get it to exercise a bit.

Last night the black silkie got it's head stuck in the dog cage while the roo was going to town so we did an intervention. We moved the silkie to a laundry basket for the night with food and water.

The silkie did really good alone, it looked relieved. I had it in my lap for at least an hour until she fell asleep in a nice warm towel. She's a very content bird. I hope it's a she, o/w it may need counseling. Fredo seems to be turning into quite the guy

Not only that Fredo bit my son twice! We may have to get a sign "Beware of Chicken" so people know we are protected!

If any of these birds ever lays an egg we will jump for joy!

How do you know your chicken had a yeast infection? That's something I've never heard of.

Can't say about those in the freezer though.

How old is your son? Your lucky cause Fredo is a silkie, and they don't do much damage, but can use their spurs to injure you. They run at you, bite & try to spur at the same time. Spurs are located on the back of the feet. I really don't understand why you dont' think this is serious. If he jumps & bites or spurs him in the face, which can happen, it won't be so amusing I don't think.I'm just concerned.

Lynzi, sorry about your duck On my way to Metella's the other day I almost took out someone's pet duck. It was just standing in the road and couldn't be bothered to move when the car came up on it. I had to go around it slowly. I told it it was lucky I owned ducks or someone not quite as fond of them may have wiped it out.

Why do birds, you probably don't want your son chasing your frizzle. They're prey animals and she was probably terrified. They aren't like dogs, they don't need to be walked and get excersize like that. They move slow because they're feather footed and it slows them down. My bantam cochins do a slow waddle.

Also, your rooster is biting people now. That's a sign that he's going to be aggressive. I'll say it again, it won't be cute when he flies up at your son's face spurs first. You really need to get a handle on the situation before it gets worse, because it's really not cute. Not trying to be harsh, I just don't feel like you're listening to us. Your son chasing around one of his hens is not going to help things at all.
