NY chicken lover!!!!

We would need to rent because the plan after that is for him to move up to a position that requires him to travel often and we need to be in a "centralized" location. So we may even have to move into PA after that.

How far out can you be? Have you looked at East Berne? Duanesburg? I'm just thinking of the more rural areas. Schenectady isn't too far either but not sure about keeping poultry there. I love Albany. It's such a "pretty" city. I'm not sure of your financials, how about Stuyvesant area? Or Ballston Spa? Remember the Navy base/submarine training center is there so they may have many housing options in/around Ballston Spa. I hope you enjoy your time in Albany! Crossgates Mall is nice. And Mr. Subb has very good bread for their subs. Are you familiar with Albany?

DH came home from work this afternoon with news of having to move again :-( I'm not sure when, but we'd be heading back to the Albany area. I have mixed feelings on this because although I did love living in Latham and loved the schools there, I don't see us getting as lucky as we did with this property and finding something that is "in the sticks" and allows us to keep raising chickens. :-/

Lots of places "in the sticks" around here. Me, for instance. LOL But the school district here is NOT good. Guilderland, S. Colonie, Mohonasen are all good districts that have areas that have property with space. Bethlehem is also good, but pretty pricey. Troy...well, really Center Brunswick...Tamerack Schools...LOTS of farms out there, enough that there is a Tractor Supply just as you enter Center Brunswick.

Where does your Hubby work again? I don't want to tell you someplace that is an hour commute for him.

Well speaking of mean roosters let me set some folks straight.

I had a barred rock and he hit me good more than once. I hurt for days after that. What's more they can and will FLY in your face. You'd learn a hard lesson if they took your childs eye out. Spurs or no spurs.

I once had a broody hen hit me good when I tried to mess with her two chicks.

Now for those who think it's cute to let the kids torment your chickens I will be very firm. You should not have animals. It's mean and cruel. It's teaching kids bad animal husbandry practices. There is a proper way to deal chickens and I suggest you learn what that is.

I've been clear that I'm not fond of Silkies but I would never harm one. Not for any reason. The one time I did have Silkies the rooster was NOT gentle and meek. Some are and some are not. He wasn't mean but he sure didn't like to be messed with.

I've instructed everyone who goes near my chickens to move slow, gentle and be calm. Not to make any sudden moves. Stressing out your chickens is a good way to kill them. It can bring on disease and other problems. Perhaps you don't care?

Please if you're the type of person who tortures and pesters your animals or allows your kids to do so, please don't advertise it here.

All right I'm done.

Was this directed toward me? Are you nuts? I have a 13 year old who walks behind a chicken. We do this because they aren't potty trained. They aren't stressed out. A good way to kill a chicken is to have it processed for dinner. We keep ours free from disease and other animals, including wild birds. They sit in our laps at night and watch TV with us, including the rooster. I'm not sure what images you have conjured up in your mind but a 13 year old is responsible, not a little kid running around. The chickens walk around slow, thus the comment about the silly birds. If they are loose we have to walk behind them so that they don't make a messy outside of their area. This is simple common sense. We live in a house with them. We clean up after them, Immediately! I'm hoping you aren't directing this toward me. I don't advertise and it's wrong for people here to say that we "torture" our animals. We did an experiment to see a reaction. We plan to separate the rooster so that it doesn't accidentally kill the other birds. If it wasn't for my 13 y/o helping me get the silkies head out of the crate yesterday it's neck would've broke the way the rooster was abusing it. It's head was clearly stuck and it was screaming. If you all consider separating birds because they're being attacked then I guess we're wrong and we should just house them all together and pick up the dead bodies in the morning.

I'm just saying....

I've never heard of chickens living IN the house. I brood my babies in the house, but the sooner they can go outside, the better.

To each their own, though.

He'll be going back to the Dino he helped open in Troy to replace the MP there. I guess they're moving people around. We're familiar with the area but remember we lived in Latham. As much as I loved the schools there is like to be a little further away from civilization like we are here. Il have to do some looking around. The renting part is what has me worried. I refuse to rent in a complex again. I want a single family home. :-(

Crossgates Mall is nice, but Destiny USA is sooooooo much nicer and all the things they have for kids now....ugh I'm gonna miss this place. Here's to hoping I wake up tomorrow and this is just a terrible dream!

Very cool. You must have many chickens! We probably wouldn't have any chickens if we weren't allergic to everything else but fish. Sounds like you have a nice set up!

Well, no...we have four hens and a rooster. Outside in the coop. We have 15 or so brooding in the house. We'll overwinter a max of 10 birds, plus at least two silkies.

The birds we hatched last year (8) were in the house in our brood box for a couple of months while we waited for hubby to finish their coop. The smell drove us nuts. And when one of the cockerels started practicing his crowing...that helped to encourage hubby to get that coop done right quick.

I'm sure you have reasons for keeping your birds in the house...but chickens really aren't great inside pets. I guess I'm just curious as to why you keep them in the house...and if its because you don't have anywhere to put them outside, why wouldn't you wait until you CAN keep them outside before getting them?

You won't have dead bodies in the morning...roosters live with their hens for a reason....to protect them. (No, yours wasn't protecting the trapped hen, but he is teenager...it's all ME ME ME at that age....he WILL protect them when they are outside.

And don't listen to things typed that offend you. I understood what you were talking about....seems others didn't read all the words and jumped to conclusions based on facts not in evidence.

I do remember you lived here while he opened the Troy Dino...right after you said it, of course.

His store is in Rensselaer County. That info will help you search online for places. Averill Park would not be a bad commute for your hubby...schools are good at the elementary level (don't know about upper grades). Center Brunswick is just up Hoosick Street about 6 miles...Tamerack schools are wonderful....small town feel, large area finances. You should be able to find some place to rent. I did a quick search and found several in Rensselaer county. One *I* wanted to rent...LOL....but it was too big for the two of us. Your best bet is NORTH of Troy for farm land and decent commute. North Greenbush is a good area too. WONDERFUL schools.
