NY chicken lover!!!!

Brought the ducklings outside today since it's so warm out. The minute I set them down in the grass they darted off so fast! I got scared for a minute thinking I wouldn't catch them but then I realized they spotted the adult ducks and went chasing after them as any baby duck would. The mamas didn't know what was going on so of course they were running away, I've never seen baby ducks run so fast!

Well from what I can see some "lots" Parcels cross from on zone to the next. Seems to me if I had a parcel that crossed into the Agr/res. zone, I'd just stick my coop over the line to where it is okay to have chickens.

Now if the chickens can't read and they crossed the line what could I do about it?

Yes! We are exactly on the line! We're on the side of the street that doesn't cross into the agricultural, but we have 1 acre and back up to the woods. Seriously. And our neighbors are on board. I don't understand why my husband called code enforcement to begin with (especially now) - I read through the code and they don't mention livestock at ALL!

Many towns and villages never put that in, thinking they would never have to deal with the issue. At least not until now. Perhaps a visit to the town/village hall would yield more positive results. If you explained your plans and showed them that you are allowed to have chickens, when applying for permit or variance. Explaining that you are doing it as a courtesy rather than a need to do so.

Or you could just get the chickens and keep a copy of the code showing they are not banned. If anyone says anything just tell them there is no ban and you are thinking of getting pigs if they pressure you further.

If there is not any actual mention of it in the code, I would specifically ask them why they are not allowed. And from there, I would also ask, "Do you enforce the 'no chickens' rule?"

Back when we lived in RI, the kids and I hatched chicken eggs as part of a homeschool "fun thing to do." We lived in a residential/industrial zone and were not planning on keeping them but, once they hatched, I was tempted. So I called and the code enforcer told me that they were not allowed but then he said, "However, I don't drive around looking for people who have chickens. I have better things to do. I'm not a chicken warden."

If your neighbors are ok with it, and not the type to complain...you're probably ok to keep them.

Now if they can't show you were specifically the code says you can't have chickens...than I say do what Rancher suggested...lol!

Hi everyone!

Trying to help a friend out who wants to buy day olds (or young chicks) of different breeds that she can enjoy on her new property with her husband and three children. Her beliefs don't want to support a system that culls day old male chicks and she would rather buy from a hobby/serious breeder that can supply some good ol egg laying girls to start her own very flock. Does any one know someone in the Orange County area that she can contact for this? She lives in Warwick, NY

THanks

So shes wanting day old females only?

She would like that, but wants a roo as well as they will free range. I explained to her about straight run, and autosexing breeds and I think they just want somewhere local where they can get some birds to start a small flock, and support local community as opposed to commercial hatcheries.

Thanks
