We used to look for it on the 5hour drive to my father's house. I haven't been down that way in a long time, maybe 9 years. Wow that is a long time. I guess that I need to go back down home sometime soon.

Hey, just getting started with chickens, only 1 hen right now (a mutt i don't know what she is...) and I am wondering if there is anyone here in NY fairly close to the binghamton area who would have bantam cochin hen's for sale. I am looking for just 1 right now, preferably 3-6 weeks old.

Please PM me if you have one or know someone who does.

Thank You,
Fred
I'm trying to catch up today so maybe someone has already answered but I know if you have a facebook account there is a Binghamton Backyard Chicken. Good luck in finding.

The rest were duds, never started to develop. Is that common in shipped eggs or could that be a fertility issue?
one of my barnevelders died, I
..Does anyone remember at what age Stoney said a bird would die if it was a heart issue?

Here are some pictures! I think I have one blue, one black and one looks like a combo of blue and black so I'm not sure how to classify that one.
(They are BBS Ameraucanas)

Cuties All .Congrats
Shipped eggs - usually 1/2 make it ....shipping scrambles them I guess
Stoney -Heart defects show up around 8 -10 months

Pharm have you tried the goat cheese with honey mellows it out, Black Cat Cafe in Sharon Springs makes wicked black mac cheese with it, favorite cheese cake use goat cheese.
Fresh Eggs Daily has article on treating and preventing Salmonella truthful I'am more worried about MRSA.

Study of Bacteria count in washed eggs verses unwashed eggs
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21673176

If I read this correctly, the tests were performed after taking the eggs from the pens. I always thought that by washing the eggs, it then allowed for bacteria to enter in through the shell, not that the bacteria was immediate.

Whew! I was worried about my rats testosterone for nothing! lo. Talk about marketing ploys.

Is it okay that the other eggs that I want her to try to hatch has got dry egg on them? Will they still be okay? I know that I can't wash them now so what should I do. I really want her to try to hatch those eggs.

. She is near the bottom of the pecking order and I don't want anyone to bother her too much.
Best to put her where she is protectded TT is at the bottom of the pecking order too..so other hens sometimes chase her out
Eggs sometimes get ickies on them from other hatching eggs .I would take a paper towel & wipe it off ...if it is wet .
Wear Gloves - broodys can be lethal....or pick her up quickly by pressing on her wings to move her ...they usually dont react right away to that .
Funny TT only pecks me if I have gloves on ...

Ask DH how many eggs to give the broody ? As a trial Run - 1st broodys dont always complete their mission

I had similar Trauma/ Drama today .. Dueling Broodys

We had 2 Baby chicks hatch today . Monkeys chick didnt live long ..it didnt absorb the yolk .
Well I took the chick out & buried it ...TT went out of her nest ..Monkey went over to her nest ..
I dont know if she was trying to take the chick or attack it ..I was glad I was there ..To toss her out .
TT came back She attacked her & started back in the nest again ..
So I put a box between them ( our 6 nesting boxes are across from each other .)
I moved TT out of the nesting boxes & they are all in the small dog cage ( TT , Baby & 2 eggs )
Baby is a Full Sumatra ! & TOTALLY CUTE

It hatched from a stored egg ...I didnt wash them ..stored them in the Frig for about a month ..Waiting for a TT to go broody & hatch her own eggs .
I am secretly hoping for Roo so she has a Mate ...As she is alone .

I'm kinda doing the same thing except for my kids 4 h projects. I'm trying to rotate the right birds in and sell or freez the wrong ones. I have 53 birds right now :o but decided our over the winter cap is 30. I also just put 14 chicken eggs in the bator. And tomorrow I'm doing ducks. Everyone can keep 3-4 birds for each project. I have a hen sitting on eggs but a friend of mine wants 7 baby's. I'm thinking about giving her the EE chicks that hatch and switching my other baby's. They are a little over a week at hatch day. Do you think that would work?? I'm kinda new at all this lol
It'll probably be fine. Just do the switch at night and watch the hen. Some birds are great at accepting new chicks... others, not so much!

I currently have about 20 bbs orp chicks, plus 30 meat chicks and 10 turkeys that are due to arrive any day (from Meyer) and an incubator full of eggs. I'm also about to set 16 maran eggs.... Way too many birds!! I'm hoping to not carry over any more than 18-20 birds.

As for adult birds, I have 8 orps, 3 speckled susesx, a speckled orp cross and some RIR hens.

Oh! I forgot about the 20 ducks that are due to hatch in a week!!
