NY chicken lover!!!!

TOB you take such great photos - what's your secret????

Hi Boskelli,

Thank you for the nice compliment.

I'm a wildlife / bird freak, and I keep the camera with me most days, even during hum-drum outings like bringing my kids to school or heading to the grocery store. Some of my best sightings have been from the car and I'm always keeping an eye out.

I have a decent camera that I got for Christmas -- a SONY Alpha SLT 65. This is thanks to my hubby, who tolerates my hobby and my addiction for seeking out and "shooting" critters.

I've taken so many "epic fail" pictures, believe me.... but over the years there have been some photo's that I treasure and I started to catch on to what works (light is EVERYTHING!) My wish for each shot is to get an intimate portrait of whatever animal or bird I'm photographing at that moment.

Morning all. Another beautiful day today. The beasties were pounding on the doors this morning to get out. When I locked up Little Mans coop last night I noticed a smell coming from the coop. I picked up the broodys and found and egg beside one of them that had exploded, sort of. Ditched that thing in a hurry. First time thats ever happened. All the other eggs seemed fine. I'll check again this morning. Mosquitoes are healthy this year. I am running the gauntlet now each morning and evening. They love me, I hate them.

Rancher--glad to hear the news on DW. Sounds like you need some fresh young blood in your del pen. I can my older layers that are done. Mighty tasty.

Off to the pharm today. Hoping for a non-crazy day but its a crap shoot. Ta for now.

The thing is they were all laying very well. They may have passed but they were still laying. That's why I like my Dels, they're great layers. Even in the winter they lay good after a fall pause.

Got my 'bator fan running again this afternoon. When I cleaned it out with the vacuum before using, the fan must still had too much dust and gunk build up. So Hubby used his great lungs and blew all the crud out that was gumming up the fan. Back to running. Of course then the temp spiked and had to play with that again.
Hubby helped me candle tonight. He couldn't quite get the right handhold on the flashlight, so instead weighed the eggs as I candled each. Got to see some good veining and movement in them. Found 2 not developed and 2 blood rings, leaves me with 26 eggs. Couple more were questionable, but too dark to be certain. One week left if I don't end up cooking them all!

Sad night tonight. I went to close up the chickens and something had killed and partially eaten my barred cochin bantam hen who had chicks. The chicks are nowhere to be seen and I'm sure she died trying to defend them. So tomorrow a trap is going out and it's going to be baited with chicken.
