    1. small animal related to weasel: a woodland animal related to but larger than the weasel that has brown fur and emits a foul smell when disturbed.

Lynzi - good luck figuring out how best to get your new little duckling situated when (I hope!) it hatches.

County Boy - you've got some really beautiful birds there. Any hunches as to why one was hatched without toes, or was it an injury? Some genetic quirk or something to do with incubation? Probably doesn't bother him all that much, I'd guess!

Rancher - I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your hen to the prowling fox. Wild animals don't know "right from wrong" -- just that it's an easy meal. It's good that your neighbor chased it away, because that might send a strong message to the fox that it's a risk maybe not worth taking. Also good that it wasn't rewarded with the actual kill to eat. You have a nice neighbor there....

Lots of eggs coming here; it's very nice to be able to not only have plenty for our own family, but enough to share with my mom and neighbors. All from 6 hens. I'm grateful for their "work!" They sure do appreciate their free range time, though it's usually for short stretches. I get paranoid when then head down into the overgrown scrub and woods and go to round them up. Probably at my risk of getting ticks!

That's where the best bugs are TOB! Mine love digging in all the leaves in the woods where it's damp. That's probably why we haven't found any of those newts/salamanders here! They're probably eating them! Lol

Yes we do have nice neighbors. Sad though that he has terminal cancer. Not sure what will happen when he dies. I hope she and her mother stay since they've been good neighbors all these years.

Not a lot of eggs here lately with broodies everywhere. Two just got out but no chicks nor eggs. Not sure what happened but I didn't candle and many were no good. I think due the the moving around of the hens in the coop. Lets hope they go back to laying. They were acting like the had chicks. Poor things.

Took a walk through the woods. Whacking weeds down as I went. Poking and looking for a den. I saw that there are blown down logs crossing the creek so the Fox could be on the other side and crossing to this side. I'll go through with my gas weed whacker some time soon. The darn mosquitoes will carry me off there are so many. Still perhaps the sound of the weed whacker might be enough for it to move on.

Mine do like the woods. BR's and Black birds are not so easy to see. The Fox came right into the yard this time. Going under the gate. They were the only chickens out yesterday. Otherwise it might have gotten a bird with little trouble.

So true - the wet leaves hide lots of creepy crawlies. Mmm-mmm! Just don't get on the back side of my Lav Orp, Chumley -- she has high kickin' moves to shame a Rockette, lol! (Only she kicks backwards!) Poor Gertie follows her around and gets a face-full of dirt some times.

I remember your story about seeing a fox on the way to church, and how you turned around and ran back to your coops to make sure everyone was safe!

sounds like your Fox has learned your routines and such, have you considered one of those large havahart traps? thought i saw one on craigslist recently. i've read several times over the years that fox will move their kits if they feel threatened, keep walkin around out there, maybe she will move, probably not. sometimes you can see the game trails near the creek, look for poop and tracks right on the deer trails. also, the kits are real active right now so if you keep an eye out you may see them and get a better idea where they live
good luck, keep us posted

Not a happy ending for my sister's dog. He had been found.... Shot in the neck, collar removed and buried in the neighbors yard!!! And he is not the only dog shot and buried on this sick mans property!! There are others also! The police are investigating.
