Morning all.  Listened to the coyotes whooping it up at 4 am.  They were running the ridge just beyond the swamp.  Hadnt heard them in a while.  Dh was listening to the deer munching on our lawn at the same time.  My cat insisted on getting me up early this morning so the cheeps got out early this morning.  It is delightfully cool out.  Everyone had a nice long afternoon of freeranging yesterday.  I put the silkie chicks out in their little run (thanks lynzi for the recommendation) and they had a blast.  I was sitting with them and heard a funny cheep from them.  Looked down to see they were looking at a worm.  After a few minutes of suspicious chirps, one grabbed it and ran, chirping like crazy.  It was too funny seeing this little chick with a worm hanging from its beak and the rest of it wrapped around its beak and it was chirping and running.  Finally it ran into the carrier and dropped it on the floor and pecked it apart to eat it.  Their first worm.  A couple of the terrorists were eating the catepillars off the oak tree.  I think they are tent catepillars.  It was also weird to hear their beaks snapping shut as they were eating the bugs flying around too.  Even the chicks were catching and eating them in the air.  

Going to see about picking strawberries this morning while its still cool.  Finishing the collar on this sweater as well so I can start putting it together.  I have more projects I want to do.  Looking for a good crochet pattern to make chickens.  Anyone have one to make chicken saddles?  Thought that would be neat to make.

Crocheting saddles might not be good unless you are covering it with fabric otherwise their nails and spurs might get caught in the yarn

Judging by that egg it just laid I'd say hen!

LOL Just kidding...how old is it? I don't see any wattles on it or saddle feathers near it's tail. Could be a pullet. Are the feathers on it's crest pointy or rounded? I'm new to polish and was told if they are pointy then rooster, if rounded then hen.

Well it is done.

No more mean rooster.

It is very quite here. I didn't hear a peep out of anyone when I was busy with him this morning. They couldn't see me, but I'm sure that they knew.


Reminder to self: Invest in a sharper knife next time!!!

Now 3 days in the fridge and then DINNER!!!!!

I know that I'll get better with practice, but not bad for my first time. It was also easier then I thought it was going to be. The hardest part was catching him, and not having a sharp enough knife.

Wow, you actually did this all by yourself?!? Can I bring you my extra roosters from now on?? I'll pay ya to do mine! LOL I don't have the stomach for it. My dog rolled in something horrid this week and I was almost throwing up while giving him a bath.

how old is it? I haven't heard too many mention anything about the chest of a bird when it comes to sexing them. I mean, I'm sure the roosters have broader chests naturally, but I wouldn't base my decision off that, maybe for some breeds but not all.

just over 18 weeks it had all it tail fathers at 4 weeks I no hen are fast like tht

I would say hen...especially if there are no wattles under it beak or no comb.

its starting to get one on its head just small little spars under the bush on it head
