O.M.G. That's all I have to say! We set the trap. I woke up last night at 1:30 to get a glass a water, checked the trap and he was caught!!

Woke up this morning and he was gone! Escaped! Poof! I just can't beleive it. He pushed that door open and worked so hard at it that the door bent! This thing is relentless. Guess we have to set it and wait up all night for him next time.

They're tough. I'm surprised it didn't chew through the trap. I've seen that before.

We finally separated the drakes this week. The girls need a break and the babies needed to get out of their small area. The boys aren't very happy but they'll get over it.
Last couple of trays are in the incubator and I'm done for a while, at least until the blue mottled start laying. We should have ducks and a few cochins and silkies hatch Saturday. I did see a few pips in the duck eggs so that's a good sign

one thing you can do depending on how heavy its going to be is use a hinged board that you flip under the run when you want to move it and that you can flip back out when you want it to stay still. I'm doing this with a 3' by 9' run I'm using as a tractor during the day for my birds. I'm still leery about leaving them out at night so I put them back into the oversized brooder box they spend their nights in. We had a raccoon living in my attic this spring so I'm scared to leave my girls out at night until they have a genuine coop i can lock them into.

I pee outside all the time, and so does my dog but it obviously hasn't deterred at least one coon, so I'm not taking any chances. After reading all the horror stories of birds, foxes, coons etc killing full grown birds theres no way I'm putting my lil ones at risk until they become so big they can't possibly live in the garage anymore.

Well I don't know that it will deter coons, but I figure if I take all the precautions I can, I might deter some predators from messing with me. Some folks too if they catch me in the act.

The idea came from a Movie titled Never Cry Wolf . Adaptation of Farley Mowats autobiography 1963 stars Charles Martin Smith, as a government biologist sent into the wilderness to study the decline in Caribou. It was believed to be caused by Wolfs though there had been no documentation of Wolfs killing Caribou.
He soon encounters two wolves—which he names George and Angeline, who have pups—and discovers they seem as curious of him as he is of them, slowly dispelling their mutual fears. He and the wolves both begin social exchanges, even urine-marking their territories, producing trust and respect between them.

I can't say it works and have had two fox attacks but have to admit to not being diligent in marking and that the fox came through an area not previously marked. I will continue to mark, and if it works fine if not it just means not having to walk all the way back to the house to go.

There has been some construction in the area which may have moved the Foxes into my territory. One place I know of I've seen fox in the past. Now it's being developed so where would the foxes go?

Clear any areas fox might den up. Make lots of noise and mark anywhere you suspect foxes to walk. Let you presence be known.

Now I did see a cat mousing in my garden yesterday and while we have no cats it is welcome here any time. It might also be the reason I'm not seeing any rabbits. I won't discourage her.

Morning all. Dreary humid day again. Had to change out the heat bulb to a 60 watt light bulb as the 2 tiny silky babies were all the way in the corner of the brooder. They are doing well and growing. The chipmunk one is showing some blue coloring so I am thinking its a blue partridge. It will be for sale when it gets bigger. Cute little thing. The older babies were milling around my hands this morning vying for some pets. The biggest one, a boy, likes to peck me a bit so that I will pet him. He has some of his fathers traits in him and I am liking his coloring. If he proves out like I am hoping, he will be my new roo. My mutt boys are finding their voices and they sound like beginning horn players. I have decided to go get those unwanted roos from my friend on sunday and butcher them myself to see how much meat is on them. I am getting antzy to process my roos but not too early as I want to have a decent weight on them for canning. Girls are still only giving me 10 eggs a day so I will have to go through and process the nonlayers as well. I think august is going to be a busy processing month!

Elroddo--sounds like you need to send that coon a lead message. If you have one hanging around, you need to trap it and kill it. Your birds will never be safe until it is gone.

Lap--glad to see the little poopy butt is feeling better. Sometimes animals just need some time and our attention to heal and right themselves. Hopefully it continues to get better.

Nice duck hut and run Horsekeeper! You keep on building. You can come down here and build if you run out of stuff to build up there!

Rancher---cool idea with those dresser drawers!

Off to another long day at the pharm. Its a holiday weekend so everyone will be in to refill their meds they ran out of last week and could you just call the dr for a refill because I really need it what do you mean they arent there but I need it now because I am going away........I love my job. I really do. Just not on holiday weekends.

This past garage sale at the school forgot. Other wise I would have bought the buffet that was for sale and turned into a broody hutch. I'm kicking myself over that one.

I once read an article about a guy in NYC who turned a dresser into a coop for three hens. Now I just type in an idea and find lots of stuff on line.

Sometimes folks don't realize how long it take to get refills and sometimes we forget. I put mine in front of the computer.

One problem I do have is I miss a day here and there and don't realize the RX has expired and I need a new script.

At my age I never expect things to move fast. Though you would think with today's technology things would. I think it's because technology has created more steps to doing things. Paperless society, my sweet aunt Fanny!

Call the doc and it 15 minutes of "If you're calling for this, press this and if you calling for this press this". How about I press my fist into your pie hole!! I get so tired. Can you tell I just had trouble with my phone bill? Used to be the receptionist would just ask and please hold and I'll transfer you. Two seconds to say, I'm calling to refill my RX.

Just a comment. I had a Black Copper Marans over my hens and would let babies hatch. Pretty much all the babies turned out to look like him no matter the breed of the hen. (dark) Also, hopefully this doesn't happen to everyone, but every time I ordered chicks, supposedly pullets, there would be a cockerel in the bunch.

I suppose it depends on who you order from. Sexing is only 90% accurate or they just don't feel like throwing his little butt in the chopper. You may have just saved his little life. At least until he becomes dumplings.

I think I'm going to order a buff Orpington rooster and a blue laced wyandotte rooster. I will probably end up with a unexpected male but my sister already said she would take it. I think Dominique roosters are beautiful but heard they are aggressive....

Well now I do know they hens I had were not friendly and even less so if they hatched chicks. Still no rule is hard and fast. A Dominique rooster might be easy as pie. My one girl was big and beautiful.

Yesterday morning the BO broody seemed to want to take the kids out, and the other moms and chicks were out. The other moms attacked her and the chicks. I clot in there and recovered the chicks, put everyone back in the little coop...but one black and whit chicks right knee is damaged. Very wobbly, and s/he doesn't use that leg. Couldn't figure out how to splint it...does anyone know? Doesn't cover a lot of ground, so it may not make it...

Will get some fencing to separate this bunch from the other, and allow them to see each other. It's on my list for today.

Depnding on its size try a couple bandaids? Or maybe a couple qtips then bandaids? You can make a splint out of just about anything
