what are the requirements to sell eggs in NY, from a farm stand?

Have you got any eggs yet ? They are old enough now arent they ?

I have 4 that are only a couple weeks old. But not sure on gender. They are all either pure Plymouth Rock or a rock cross

I also have an incubator full due to hatch in 2 weeks

That is good to know. We're losing our little girl (the survivor). Something is wrong with these chicks. She was walking yesterday and cannot walk at all now. Silently peeping. Will call Meyer in the morning. If we can't get replacements, then we'll get some local. So very sad.

Leah - so sorry !

You did everything right getting ready for them - so don't put this on your shoulders ! get just a few local peeps to get you going if they don't have the breeds you want ...and then get more in the spring.

It really is so rewarding to raise up a batch of peeps.


Speaking of that - my miracle rooster now has his first generation ... and I have a young roo that looks just like him .... sigh. Going to be really hard to cull him. Seems Colo is throwing mostly roos, and this one looks exactly like him. Which - because he is not like a buff orph .... is unusual - he is a mix of EE and Welsummer - so I expected that him being pappa with a mix of hens would never give me one that looked exactly like him! Go figure.

Anyone want a roo from a VERY hardy line? And his momma laid well well into her 5th year, and was the sweetest hen I've ever known. She passed her sweetness on to her son, and so I hope all of this generation.

I'm not sure but I do understand that if you sell, more than $5,000 in product a year you'd need an inspection or license to do so. I looked it up years ago but can't remember it all.

You could check the USDA site.

I'm going to be hanging a sign up and see what happens.

I do have a lone chick too. Poor thing nearly died. Put it with Suzy Sussex but she has so many chicks it just didn't keep up and got cold. She has 10 chicks I think and Bonnie Blue has 9. Bonnies are much to older so she couldn't take it and I've no where to stick another broody hen.

Ace hardware has canning jars on sale. Wide mouth pints. I just has a friend drop off about 4 cases of jelly jars. The weather is going to turn cold, so I might be doing up berries.

Speaking of canning jars, I just bought a lot of quart canning jars at the Tully consignment store. One bunch was sold in a laundry basket, so the chicks get a hiding place, too.

Last night I shut the chickens up when it was getting pretty dark. For some resin the BO had not gone into the little coop, she was on the ground under the coop, so I picked her up and stuck her inside, and a couple of chicks. She was making strange noises, the BR mom and her one chick had decided to use the roost there, and did not want room mates. I moved them back to their shared crate and will put in a roost bar or two today. She was being miserable and going after the chicks...it makes me worry about incorporating the chicks into the larger flock. But I suppose at the right time it will all work out.

Morning all and welcome to all the newbies! Always nice to have new people in the neighborhood! So sorry to hear of everyones losses on shipped chicks. I cant imagine getting a box of dead chicks. Heartbreaking. Well we didnt get the rain yesterday that was promised but it was miserably humid. Let the reds and legolas out to run when we got home. The reds in the terrorist coop were better at going in last night. Only had to chase them a little bit. I did go in and do the whole boss hen pecking on the roosts to the meanies when they went after the newbies. They are learning quick that I wont tolerate said behavior. I know that in the chicken world there is a pecking order but a couple of these girls are just being bullys. Chicken momma doesnt put up with that. I let the juves out today and I am hoping they will go in on their own tonight. Little fluffy butts are too cute. First thing they did was run and jump and flap their wings. Guess they are glad to not be locked in the coop any more. It is a dark day out but cooler, thank goodness.

Glass--nice score on the canning jars. I can get 1 to 2 roosters in a quart jar. Legs and breasts. In case you have one ( or more) getting on your nerves.

I was looking at my tomato plants this morning. Apparently some of the leaves on the back side were encroaching on the fencing of the run so my chickens took it upon themselves to prune them back where they could. Hence the reason I have my garden fenced off like fort knox.

I haven't posted in a while but we FINALLY got our chicks. I ordered from Meyer hatchery and they shipped tester eat/arrived today at noon. 3 out of four of the chicks were dead on arrival...I am so, so sad. Something must have happened in shipping. I have a lone, surviving Buff Orpington. She is sad but alive... a bit wobbly but she has had something to drink and eat. Here is our lone survivor. If anyone knows of a person selling chicks in the Jamestown area, I'd like to get her a friend.
