NY chicken lover!!!!

I've noticed Buckwheats stomach is not quite so swollen. Only thing I've done is feed her layer and added lots of non-soluble grit. I figured it would move through her system and push things along if anything was blocking it. I may add some vitamins and electrolytes to her water. Whatever is/was wrong, I'll wait and see how it goes.

Two more chicks born and added to the brooder.

Two roosters picked up today. I'm glad as they weren't acceptable. The Del was mean to Frenchy and I nearly killed him outright. The Birchen had red in him. With new chicks being born I'm hoping for another like the mean one I gave away, but not mean like his dad.

My other Del roo chortles to come eat and doesn't seem mean to the young ones.

The trouble with getting rid of unneeded birds is folks just want to take the girls. Even when they're getting birds for free! You know what I say to that don't you?

$50 is outrageous! Our 4H is $15.00. Sign ups for all 4H is October. Contact your local 4H office & talk to the person in charge. I think that the "club" person you talked to might charge $50, but 4H itself is only $15. Ask what clubs there are, and then decide if you want to join one. Kids can be independant members and not belong to a club. Call your local 4H office & ask them.

About that supposed "silkie". It has so many disqualifying faults it isn't funny. Wrong comb, wrong feet. Silkies have walnut combs, not straight combs, and 5 toes with feathers coming down the leg and the 3 outer toes. Combs & wattles are dark mulberry colored, ears are bright sky blue. all skin is black

About 3 years ago the county legislature cut all funding to at least 4H and maybe even cooperative extension -- I can't remember exactly. In NYS any funding from the state government is a match of what the county provides - so they lost ALL funding from both county and state levels. The only way the program kept going at all was because they raised the price to $50.00 per child. They also started a type of fund for donations from people to help keep 4-H running in the county. They do have a scholarship program for families who struggle to meet that cost.

Yes its pricy - but the next county over is probably going that way too as they have a new director who audited the books and found out that the 4H program there is actually several thousands of dollars in the hole due to poor book keeping on the part of multiple parties.

Well, I'm gonna be inundated with chicks shortly. I have nine mottled houdans due this coming Thursday and also an order of 25 egg layers coming by Friday. I needed the extra birds my flock was decimated by illness a while ago. My poor remaining hens are all starting to get bare backed so the addition should be welcome.

Well it's official, we'll be moving Aug 7th/8th into our new place. Movers are coming to the house Aug 7th, I'll follow them out and meet them and my husband at our new house on Aug 8th. DH left a little while ago to go to his hotel for the night in MA and start his new job tomorrow. We signed out papers for the house today. Definitely a bittersweet day. It's all starting to hit me now. Here's to hoping these next two weeks go by quickly so our family can all be together again!

Good Luck!

I moved to Dutchess County four years ago from Long Island. It was quite the change, for the better for me, but I was so worried about the children. They have all settled in and out of the four of them, 2 say they would never move back. The other two are ok here but miss their friends. I understand how you feel... bittersweet is the right word. Make sure you take the time to have a glass of wine at night.. and breathe!

It will go too quick ...you are going to be busy ...
It is good you will be back near family ...that is important
did you mention chickens ? can you have them ?

Lynzi777 - best wishes for a good move and please DO keep us posted. Always an adventure when you move.

I wish I could get a garden going as well as I get the chickens going ! All my chickies doing well, and even the integrated adults all settle within a day and I have one harmonious flock. Now what the heck is happening to my garden ?!!! Do others really spend hours each day weeding ? Where do they get the time ? I can afford 5 minutes a day -and I suppose it is obvious ... since I have to push through the weeds to check on my squash. ha ha

Morning all. Our run north to my mothers house was bittersweet. Came back with a truck full of stuff that was mostly my fathers stuff (tools and what not) and a snowblower. Just another painful reminder that he is no longer here. Anyways, got to see some of the neighbors chickens and coops while up there. Talked to a lady who works at the Governeur fair and she said this is a big year for chickens. They have a lot of entrys this year, more so than any other year. Thats good for that area. I am looking forward to the Dutchess county fair. They usually have a pretty good poultry barn.

The young lady who watched the cheeps and the house while we were gone did a superb job. She left a note saying she feels like a farm girl now that she took care of them for two days and got eggs. Hope she still has that feeling after we get back from vacation! Its nice to know that she is comfortable with them and takes good care of them for me.

Im glad to see that someone pointed out that "silkie" as being so wrong on so many levels. I almost spit out my coffee this morning when I read the caption of show quality silkie. I am sure that its owner loves it and thats great but that bird as a silkie? Well, its all a learning process I suppose. Wish they had a pic of the Rhode Island Red. I am finding that too often what is said to be a Rhode Island Red is really not. Learning process for me as well but now that I have some of the real deal, I am understanding and seeing the differences. I will say they are big birds. Clyde, at 4 months old, is as big as my barred rock 2 year old hens and he isnt done growing yet. I have no intention of showing any of my birds. They are my layers/meat/project birds and thats it. Working on culling to get down the numbers but keep the best for breeding. Hoping to have some nice babies in the spring.

Lynzi--congrats on the move. Can you have chickens? Viewers are dying to know.

Jlaw--hope you can get a different shift. I think you would be a great asset to a 4 h club. Dont fret about the not knowing stuff. We all have to start somewhere. When I first became a Girl Scout Leader many moons ago, I knew nothing. Learned about stuff as I went and from experienced leaders. Spent 11 years as one and watched all my girls grow up, graduate and become the great young women they are today.

Metella--my garden is doing okay despite the fact that the chickens are pressing against the wire and eating some of my tomato plants. Going to fix that today with some lattice fencing I got from my mom. Bad Hens!!!!

Dreary day. Guess I will clean. Later.
