i have been seeing stress cracks in some odd shaped eggs lately ..one of my girls lay a strange shape large egg and they always seem to have cracks in them ..they are not leaking anything from in side the eggs ..its like the egg cracked inside her from trying to push them out and her body heals the cracks .still can see the cracks ..not selling any of those but keeping them to give back to the girls ..i am kind of getting worried as she layes about 4 cracked ones aweek ..sometimes they are just misshapen but alot have those cracks in them ..anyone else ever heard of this ..i tried googling it but all i ever find is cracked eggsa from birds pecki8ng at them ..and thats not the case here..any ideas would be helpful..thanks..

For some reason the "quote" is not working right.

Anyhow. You might try increasing the oyster shell. I toss some into the feed on occasion. Egg formation could be a disease, genetic or feed problem.

I've noticed "bits" or "bumps" on the side of some eggs if the oyster shell is too high. It can be tricky. While the feed is supposed to have enough it doesn't. If you mix your own feed it may not.

Grit is not a treat it is a necessity. These are domesticated animals not prone to fending for themselves.

I have a marans hen that lays a large egg but there is a crack right in the middle of the egg as though she's taken two halves and stuck them together. Can't say why. Such is life I guess.

I do not raise chickens to feed THEM eggs and I see no sense in doing so. That may be the problem.

i have only feed them eggs once and it was because i ran out of feed but that was months ago..i do give free choice oyster shells and gritt theres always a bowl full of..shes a production bird but it seems she is the only one that doesnt lay everyday ..she goes threw periods were she lays regular and everythings fine but lately shes been giving me the ones with cracks in them ..i no they are not from pecking because i've stood there and watched her lay them..she is a yr and ahalf old ..she maybe getting ready to stop laying ..the 4 production birds have laid just about every day since they started laying ..you no now that i think about it she start right around the time i introduced the new birds ..there were only 4 at first but now theres 22..

We have 4 BCM's, 4 Golden Comets, 5 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 1 EE. I definitely want a few more EE's and a handful of other cool looking hens. Maybe some silkies. Polish. Or something with feathery feet. I can be emailed directly at [email protected]

If I dont get to it before another hen gets in that nesting box it is toast ...once in a while I think she lays one with fine hair line cracks or the end isnt totally closed .
shes a comet ..and she has probably laid a egg a day for almost 2 years ...

something Funny happened to me yesterday ..
My cat caught a chipmunk ...I felt sorry for the little thing ..it wasnt moving so I thought it might be paralyzed.
So I went over to them to see if I could help the little guy escape .
so he decided to move ...it crawled up the outside of my pants leg ...& under my arm & up on my shoulder .
Then it was like it realized " hey I am on a human " And it dove off my shoulder ..into the brush ...so it got away ...from my cat

yeah shes just a yr and a half ..i raised her from a chick...do you think maybe the stress of having all the new birds mixed in has something to do with it ..she started this about the same time i introduced the new and old flock ..altho they lived right next to each other and could see each other threw the fence for a few months before i put them all together..

My odd story ... yesterday - mid-morning -

Found bantam millie flur d'uccle who is 2 years old on his back and twitching legs once in a while .... I picked him up - he wasn't happy but couldn't - didn't struggle ... I put him in the barn all heaped up with soft warm hay and upright and left him to die a peaceful death.

This morning he was in the exact same place - but mewed at me and walked out the barn and started to eat scratch.

??? Mild case of botulism ? Just cold? It was cold yesterday morning.

Very odd. We'll see how he does through today.
