NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a new question, I'm trying to plan the run which will be strong and covered... but... how did you all do your door? Did you buy one, build one and how did you secure it so nothing could get in under it. Also, how wide and tall did you make it?

Being the 'cheapskate' I am

I bought an old wooden door from a 2nd hand place. Trimmed it to be square and mounted it into the door frame constructed for it. I will try to post pix later,

Hi all,

I wanted to update on the homeless Speckled Sussex situation. As of yesterday morning, my temporary flock grew to FOUR hens. The number seems to have halted there, haha. No more this morning.

I understand that it would be best to provide them with a coop for protection but it's not really feasible for me, since it's just for a few days. They are still roosting high up in a row of pine trees at night.

I have a friend who has a farm and has lots of chickens that lives about 20 minutes away. They have offered to take them all. They told me that based on the pictures I posted on instagram, they look like pullets. So, that's why I haven't seen any eggs. :)

I hung up a sign last night at Stewart's and will give it until Wednesday to see if anyone responds. I ordered a large, long-handled fishing net that is coming on Wednesday. I hope to use it to catch them! I have two large, hard plastic cat carriers, so I will transport two at a time out to my friends farm on Thursday.

Any other tips to catching them? They are very skittish. The closest I can get to them is when I go out to feed in the morning. They all run over to me when I go outside but when I reach out to pet them, they skitter away.

Good luck with the fishing net! I used it once - took the hens about 10 seconds to figure out what it was for and then they became impossible to catch. Chicken wrangling is not for sissies!

My best suggestion is to continue with feeding them for now and see if you can gradually get near to them - or perhaps you could put some feed into a large dog crate type container and wait......................

Ha, ha Lol! Just before you try to catch them watch 'Rocky catching chicken' on youtube for insperation.
I have a Brown leghorn and a Eegr bantam that dont like to come back to the coop with the rest of the flock, its ridiculous! I try to herd them with my kids help, they almost never cooperate. I thought about a fish net, probably a net gun would do better, somedays I just feel like using the pellet rifle so I can eat them before the coon, opposum, or fisher does. I try not to top off their feed dish until later in the day and hope they are hungry enough to go back into their coop.
I usualy transport fullgrown chickens in burlap sacks, they are calmer when they can't see.
Good luck!

And FYI, our local Craigslist is VERY active here in the Albany, NY area--put them on for $5 and they would be gone quickly! We also have a few poultry swap groups on Facebook--a few pictures and a post about their plight and they would get snapped up in hours!!

In the "search" bar on Facebook, type in "Sloansville Poultry & Small Animal Farm Swap"
and "Schaghticoke Fall Animal Sale"

I guess the Schaghticoke Fair has a very large Swap in May and October (free to buy/look, $15 to sell). Sloansville seems to be smaller but only $5 to sell.

People are posting animals for sale/re-homing on there all the time.

Hope that helps!

I usually see laying hens and pullets $10 each on Craigslist and its free to post. I made the mistake of advertising a bunch of ducklings and their mamma for free once, withen a couple hours I had tons of calls and they were gone.

Tips - !
2) they should be easiest to catch when they are asleep & roosting .
Do you have a ladder to get to them ? I would say you might need a helper .
Or see if you can lure them into the garage with food .( they love sun flower seeds )

they have chicken catchers - they look like a hanger with a hook on the end

Seriously, if you need help sometime, I'm sure my husband would help. We both teach at APHS and could help you after school some day. He is EXTREMELY gifted at catching stuff--no joke! And me? I could take the funny video footage ;)

Lynzi, what I plan to do is use a timer like some people use to turn lights on and off at certain times. Plug that into the extension cord, plug the light strip into the timer....
I bought all the parts, but have stalled at the ladder and screwdriver part. Giving myself stern talk.

Hi I am not sure if this is the closest thread to me but i live about an hour north of watertown in gouverneur area. I have a farm where we run about 100 chickens, 100 quail, 30 geese, 30 ducks, and a whole bunch of others things, goats, horses, pigs, sheep, etc...
