NY chicken lover!!!!

What would happen if you let your big Dog out ? would he chase them away ?
If I let our big boy out I'm pretty sure that I would have a dog fight on my hands. Personally I would rather have their dog kill one of my birds then get into a fight with one of my dogs. Don't let his goofy nature fool you...he is one big tuff boy.

His name is Mater...half golden retriever half bluetick coonhound...He is our protector. This was from when he was 2.
This was from last month...

Our big boy and little girl.

I had neighbors a while back that just did not care that their dog came over several times and killed my chickens. I didn't have a gun, but the dog was going to get a one way trip to a far away pound. The last time it came over, I was even leading it to my car, but my neighbor heard me shouting at it when it was about to grab a bird and came down to grab it. I wish now that I hadn't handed it back over and had said sorry, it's on my property, it's not registered, it has no tags, I'm taking it to the pound. Feel free to get it back from there if you want it. They really didn't care one bit about it. I talked to the more than one time, they never went to Walmart to buy a tie-out for it like they said they would. It even had killed some of my other neighbor's birds, and they do have a gun, and they told the owner to their face that they would shoot it if it showed up again. They did not care. How can you claim to love and care for an animal and yet let it run free knowing there's a good chance it will be shot? And in my neck of the woods, you are more than legal to shoot it if it kills your livestock. Eventually the dog owners moved, by the way. Guess they didn't like the fact that they couldn't let their dog run loose if it didn't behave itself. Of course they left behind an intact tom cat that attacked my cat, so that was nice.
Several is a lot of times. I wouldn't give it a second chance, but that's just me.

HI,

Here's the law in NY:

§ 123-a. Exemption from civil liability. 1. If any dog shall, without justification, attack a person, or behaves in a manner which a reasonable person would believe poses a serious and unjustified imminent threat of serious physical injury to a person, when such person is peaceably conducting himself in a place where he may lawfully be, such person or any other person witnessing the attack or threatened attack may destroy such dog while so attacking, and no liability in damages or otherwise shall be incurred on account of such destruction. 2. If any dog shall, without justification, attack a companion animal, farm animal or domestic animal, or shall behave in a manner which a reasonable person would believe poses a serious and unjustified imminent threat of serious physical injury or death to a companion animal, farm animal or domestic animal, where such animal is in any place where it may lawfully be, the owner or caretaker of such animal, or any other person witnessing the attack, may destroy such dog, and no liability in damages or otherwise shall be incurred on account of such destruction.

Now I'm not saying social media won't crucify you for shooting a dog that's killing a chickens but the law says you have the right. Get your phone camera/video going as evidence. It doesn't say you are protected from hurting the dog so consider what BB's, Buckshot, stink attack could mean legally.

You might be able to give them the link to the law and show them your gun to make your point?

Sorry ...it's no fun to be in the position with thoughtless neighbors. I wish you a peaceful ending to the mess.

We give to much credence to "social media". If it's someones dog or my chickens, you know what they can do.

I have a T shirts that says "Don't annoy the crazy person" and if their dog goes after my chickens consider me Annoyed.

I had a dog problem about five yrs ago. It was the farm a mile down the roads dog. The first day it showed up, we called them, second day same thing, called them and they came and got him again.
They told us not to go near him, he was really mean. He was a very large pitbull mix. I have little kids, chickens in the coop, ducks, and ducklings and guinea hens free ranging.
A few days latter it showed up again, I was feeling partly to blame, we had a female beagle in heat, but now I'm mad. I needed to empty my muzzleloader anyway so I got it out. I don't know if I was really planning on shooting it, but I fired above it, loud bang and smoke cloud. It ran off.
A couple days latter, before daylight, I woke up to my guineas making all sorts of noise, I've heard they make good watchdogs. I didn't even know they could fly, never saw them fly, only branch to branch up a tree. My male guinea was on top of our chimney two stories high making all sorts of ruckus, and there was that darn dog again. My wife said I shouldn't call them it was too early.Ha!
The phone rang probably twenty times, I didn't threaten to kill the dog, but I'm sure I didn't sound happy.
The next time I drove by their farm it was tied up with a log chain and never visited us again.

You gave them more consideration than I would. Certainly more than they deserve.

*waves* - Hi, everyone. Long time, no talk. Busy summer / fall, just starting to slow down for the winter.

We rehomed Waffles (the light brahma mix who ended up being a roo) and he has his own flock of 15 girls just down the road. Last I heard, he was very happy.

Frita and Nugget are doing well. Frita started laying on 11/29, and has given me 4 eggs in the last 6 days. Can't complain about that. :) Hoping Nugget takes the hint and starts laying soon, too, but won't hold my breath since the days are so short.

We decided to wait 'til Spring for more chicks - Probably going to order from Meyer, since the breeds I (and my kids) want are kind of specific (Australorp, EE, and SLW.)

Still working on a housing solution, too. The girls spent most of the summer / fall free ranging in the back yard. We live in a suburban neighborhood, so predation isn't much of an issue. Now, they spend their days outside and their nights on my three-season porch so they don't get too cold. I'm trying to come up with a cost-effective way to house them, and probably six more, come spring. I've got about a $300 budget, which means buying anything pre-made of decent quality is out of the question. Thinking about picking up some more 6' chain link panels and sectioning off a corner of the yard, throwing up some tarps, building some roosts with tree branches, throwing a couple of old, insulated dog-houses in there and calling it a day.

I hope everyone is doing well. :)

welcome back ..

i would think for 300 bucks you should be able to build a nice coop ..i like the chain linked fence pannels idea..you would have to support the tarp roof so the snow doesnt colape it ..but that shouldnt be a big deal to do ..

I think a single hoop coop would work for you VERY well - small enough - easy to open onto your yard .... Pyxis is the resident expert on building them - she has had articles done about them.

I am VERY uncrafty and don't know how to build ANYTHING. I have some very basic tools, but don't own a saw or anything like that. If it's ridiculously easy, I may be able to manage it. :)
