NY chicken lover!!!!

Demp - for hard wood nuts like walnuts or acorns - it can take a tree up to 10 years to fruit and 30 to be at full baring age ...

filberts and other do grow quicker - I have 6 filberts going into their second winter .... so will see ...I am hoping I get a few nuts this year or next & each year should give me more.

However - plant at least 2 nut trees with your others! If you are forethoughtful enough to plant fruit trees - please care about the wildlife and future people and plant two or three nuts trees for those to come. Besides - they will still give you nice shade. :)

I wish someone would have cared enough about it to do it where I live ....

I love the nut trees too...I have none on my property but I have the most amazing 5 maple trees that line my property that are majestic. I think I will order some nut trees this spring when I put my tree order in...

As soon as I get to a place that I know I'll be staying, I'll put some nut trees in. Right now I'm still at the stage in my life where more than likely I'll be hopping around a bit. I guess I could plant some trees then dig them up and take them with me when I go  Bet the trees wouldn't be a fan of that though.

Does anyone know how much Tractor Supply typically sells their all female chicks for?
I know that when our local has chicks they are all around $3-$3.50ish. I can't remember for sure.

The house that I grew up in down in Dutchess County, There was a HUGE maple tree on one side of it and on the other was a HUGE chestnut tree. I couldn't wrap my arms around them they were so big. Loved that place... I would love to have some nut trees here...BUT my niece is VERY allergic to any and all tree nuts. She almost died when she ate a pistachio...So no nut trees here. I love her way more then a tree.

Have a bunch of apple trees. We had a plum tree at the apartment we used to live at and I loved it. I plan over the next 5 years to plant some more apple trees as well as a pear tree and a plum tree.

That may be my next adventure. I gave my friend some sunflowers and he planted them down both sides of his dads garden. It drew so many bees that they had record germination on the cucumbers and squash...

If you want to get into bee keeping at a reasonable price - try top bar hives. You can build your own hive for under $50 easily by using scrap lumber for all but the hive body. A package of bees will set you back around $110 at current prices - or you could catch your own swarm. Visit www.goldstarhoneybees.com. I have 2 hives, one is currently occupied by bees and I'm hoping they will make it throught the winter ok. Last winter was so bad both hives died.
