NY chicken lover!!!!

Can't speak for all of them but my welsummer roo is very calm and good with people. He's friendlier than any of the hens.
my wellie roo's mellow as well ..my wellie girls on the other hand are very skiddish ..i cant just pick them up ..they get flighty..i have been trying to get aprons on them all winter ..their backs are bare from other picking or the roo doing his dance on their backs .not sure which is the cause , the roo or the picking by others is happening..
you no i handled all my birds when they were sm every day but the wellies never took to being handled..i wait till they are on the roost to put the aprons on ,but by morning they are off laying on the floor ..its a real problum , so i am building another coop just for them this spring ..

i have a shed that i just have to wall off one part and than the run i don't know that much about the fencing

i live in adams ny and the nearest one to me is in watertown.
I used to live up that way. I grew up in Chaumont.

I set the first group of eggs in the incubator. Most of them are Maran eggs so not sure if I will be able to see what is going on. May need to put some new batteries in a few flashlights to see if I can use them to check the progress in a few days. I have 2 of my bantam eggs in there. Don't plan on hatching to many of those out this year, but who knows. I think I may have enough of them, I need some more big girls. I finished breaking one broody just to have 2 more start. One is my little pro...Cleo the white silkie...I so wish that my ducks would start back laying so I could set some of them under her. I have a few, but they are over a week old. Maybe I'll give her them for the hell of it and see what happens. I just have to convince her to stay in the little broody coop so that she can sit in peace.

On a different note..You would think that the spell check on a "Chicken" website would contain the names of the different types of chicken names so they don't come up as miss spelled...

They are out in the barn daily, so there's plenty of room for all. I sprinkle scratch daily and there is usually peace in chickendom - that's why I'm surprised. I think I'll separate them for a while and see if peace is restored.

No roosters, we had one once but he went after someone once too often.............
Might you consider another? Not all roosters are the same.

I have a nice EE.

Boskelli--sounds like some boredom going on along with pecking order and no roo to maintain law and order. Try getting some fruit and veges on sale or clearance, cut it up real small and spread it all over the barn so they have to hunt for it. Let them out if you can, even if its just to run the pathways in the snow. Sometimes confining the bullys to a cage away from the flock for a few days will do the trick as well. A nice roo will also keep the ladies in line and put a quick end to any nonsense going on. My boys are quick to lay down the law when it comes to bickering.

Hark...we are getting more snow. I was afraid we might run out. Cheeps are not happy about this, especially after being out running the pathways yesterday in the sunshine. Work was not crazy for a change and I made it up the mountain ok. I keep looking through my gardening catalogs wishing it was spring!

I hope everyone is well. Stay out of tsc if you have no self control like me or youll wind up with more babies than you can shake a fist at!

I'm having the opposite problem - I need chicks after my predator attack, and I can't seem to get to TSC! Yeesh, the first time in a couple years where I can pick up some chicks in there without feeling guilty and I can't get over there to do it!

I certainly might consider it if he was proven to be gentle, non-aggressive. The last one was a Speckled Sussex who came as a 'gentle' rooster. He was very rough with the girls & owner - he faced off with a 22 - and lost.

Well now I have two. One is an EE and he's with four other roosters and some hens. I've posted him on CL.

I also have a large Columbian Rock in with two other boys and 7 hens and no trouble from him either.

I've two little brother bantam sized in there too. Don't count the little guys out in keeping order. They're great grand dad ruled the roost of 20 some large girls.

I can get someone to take the roo if he doesn't work out. I've got his name and number. He lives nearby.

I like to go to the Regional farmers market on Saturday. Lots of cheap produce. Bags of lettuce and all sorts of stuff. Bought three bunches of parsley this week. Chopped up two and mixed it with grit and tossed it out there.

You can deal too. I got two boxes of acorn squashes that I'm just now cutting open and tossing out there too. It's frozen of course but they don't care. I bring it in to thaw and then cut it up.

Sorry my EE chicks are going to Nutty after her attack. Not sure how this next hatch will go of course but most eggs are Delaware and C. Rocks I intend to keep.

Now my Delaware roosters are nice guys too. I've got two of them together with 10 hens one of which is little Frenchy. She's perfectly happy to be in there.

TSC is getting chicks from Townline hatchery this year. You might be able to call them with a special request since TSC just gets what they send no choice. So far just sex link, Cornish rocks and Barred rocks. Pekin ducks only so far too.

I may call them myself with a special order on ducks. I don't want Pekins. Khakis at least but another breed perhaps. I'll have to check them out.

I have been avoiding TSC like the plague... Who knows how many new babies I would leave with!!

Do you still have a few fibro chicks available?
Wish I had some to give to those that lost, maybe next year I'll have more than I need. Right now I only have eight pullets and a roo. Welsummer eggs are getting frozen to often to worry about hatching yet.

Yep, chicks are safe, all were inside my workshop, which is really nice to have this time of year. It's insulated and pretty much predator proof. In fact, the darn winter is almost making it people proof - I have to fight with the dang sliding door to get in there. I'll have a nice cemani cock by the end of the week, by the way, so if you wanted some pure eggs I'll probably have them come spring.
