NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Mud city here. Another warm day today, relatively speaking. Found a home for one of the silkie boys. Delivering him today. One more to go. And the silkie pair. Things are moving along in that dept. Of course, I had inquiries about silkie eggs now that my girls have gone broody. Sigh. They are such uncooperative little girls. I thought we had an understanding after our long talk this past fall but obviously they have other ideas! I am hoping my pullets start laying soon BUT we all know how they like to take their time!

Candling my rir eggs tonight.

Rancher--flashing in front of school huh? Thats okay. I have been out in the am in my nightgown, winter jacket and high muckboots lately letting the cheeps out and the bus usually goes by at that time. Nothing like scaring the crap out of the highschoolers before classes!!!!

Yeah, the mud has me worried this year. I keep imagining elaborate duck boards to use to stay above the mud, allow the grass to grow without being eaten down to the mud, and most important keep from falling into the mud...no viable plans yet. Can't wait to get all the chickens out of the basement. Got to get a crate set up in the coop for a few days...

I'm pretty sure all my grass around my back porch has been swallowed up by the giant mud pit that developed back there. I don't know if it will ever recover, and unless I fence it off, any attempts at reseeding would result in the geese happily harvesting the fresh green grass as fast as it germinated... My mother had let the area go has her dementia progressed, so the weeds that took over in the area do not have an adequate root system to stand up to the meltwater, the mud, my really tacky waders, and constant waterfowl traffic.

Like you, I'm not sure what to do with that expanse of mud yet....

Here's hoping the grass comes back!!

You want to talk about mud..Lord have mercy I have a mud pit here to deal with..and the ducks are taking every advantage to make it worse. Where we live it is on a mountain and as the snow melts it seems to want to go right into the chicken run,

This was when it froze. The water flows right through the gate. It has since turned to a mud pit. The yard is even worse. I fell on my butt Saturday about where I was standing to take this picture. The mud turned to ice. After the snow melts and things start to dry out a little later in spring I usually keep everyone locked in for a few weeks so that I can reseed some of the areas and replace any divots that we made with the plow truck. They usually are very mad at me, but I give it 2-3 weeks to fix it up. I just get the grass seed and cover it with straw. Before we had chickens I would get some of the premix with the chemicals and stuff in it, but now just use the seeds.

Tonight is Lock Down for the eggs in the incubator! I have 5 in there at this point. Last time I checked the 3 light color eggs were doing great. Can't see in the Maran eggs, but last night one of them was twitching! Very excited! Broody is sitting on 6 more that are due in a little less then 2 weeks.

Oh and my ducks have finally started laying again after a 3 week break. I have 2 now and as soon as I get 7 they will be in the incubator next!!!

I had lost Larrikin, my sun conure. I am going to miss him so much. I had him for eight years, and I should have had him for at least twelve more. my life is going to seem so flat without him in it for a long time.

I will likely have another parrot, since once you own one your life is so empty without them, but no one will ever replace Lark
It is amazing how much joy can be brought to us by a bird ...Sorry he died ...
Was he your 1st bird ever ? that led to you having chickens ?

[/quote] Not my first bird ever - I had parakeets and two cockatiels before him. Actually between my last cockatiel, Shika, and him I almost got five chickens but ended up putting it off because when I got him I was 14 and I'd have had to save up the money for both him and the chickens, and he was $500, and that was a lot of money for me to save up at that age. No, I actually got chickens after getting a pair of ducks from my aunt, whose feed attracted a starved hen from the neighbors. I named her Pumpkin and she is responsible for my chicken addiction.

I was 17 when I got my sun and had to save for him too. He was in the $500's plus cage and supplies. I did it all on my own. I was so proud. Now I have 4 boys 2 dogs a cat and 40+ chickens

It was so nice yesterday! it made up for Sunday
i am shoveling snow on my mud paths ...so much easier to walk on than mud or ice ..
Heres a Tip For the bottom of nest boxes
Real Deals - $1.00 for a pack
I quarter them for our nest boxes
I put puppy pee pads in the bottom .
then put the nesting material back on top ..
That way when the bottom gets bad from egg or poo ...I can remove them & toss them .
A lot easier clean up ...
That's a good tip.
